I was living in Mississippi in the mid-'80s when an ice storm brought the region to a stand still. But in all fairness, it would have brought Iceland to a standstill, it was so bad. Two inch thick sheet of ice? Man, I think that'd constitute "instant armor" in any car wars sort of idiom. But then, vehicular combat, real or imaginary, would be mighty challenging to say the least on heavy ice, no?

I chipped my way into my truck using a screwdriver, and had friends help ferry hot water out to the truck to pour on the windshield, since it couldn't be scraped clear of ice. I was then the official driver of all my friends while the ice lasted. It was a Suburban, so I was able to carry everyone and their gear.

Hmm... Ice-armored automotive combat. I think I need to call ESPN2.

Ice-armored automotive combat: an unlikely mix of road rage, an NRA convention, and curling. Do the Great Lakes ice over for any length of time, as that'd be the perfect (and not to mention huge) arena.

Regarding your Suburban story, here's a future bumper sticker:

"Yes, this is my APC. And no, I won't evac your squad!"
