I will never understand why some people use white type on a dark background. Literally makes the site unreadable for me and for quite a few other people I know.

I agree. I set the view to no style to read it in the browser.

I use the old-school Rainbow computer setting on gmail so I read in green type on black. Sometimes for the ARGE mails I have to highlight the page.

Iggy or Pauly posted a link to it a year or two ago that got me hooked. He goes a long time between posts, but he writes great stuff. It was a good counterpart to Blanktop Cabs, but that one seems to have been deleted (it was a cab dispatcher with some great stories).
