I have two Core Humanities discussion sections. Usually, things go fairly well. Today, not so much. Frankly, my first section sucked so bad. It made me utterly irate. casbah/kasbah: fortress of a North African city (or the area around the fortress) -- why it's being rocked, I'm not sure; I don't really know the rest of the words to that song (I'm pretty sure I sing gibberish for the rest of it) -- I looked this up before because I used to buy boxed couscous that was Kasbah brand.

Anyhow, as for the questions: I think I'd ask very similar questions. (I'm not sure what texts you're reading and I don't think I've read them, based on the authors and areas of criticism (what was I doing when I took that CH (nee WT) class, I wonder?

As for discussion, I hear ya. I have had a lot of 101s and 102s like that. I might employ some kind of graded discussion? I might have them turn in their notebooks/freewrites (except, ugh, I loathe carrying around student notebooks)? At any rate, I hope the rest of the semester goes much better.
