What's going on with the statues? Why is everyone talking about them like it's the plague?

I am less concerned by the statues themselves as the fact that they appeared overnight.

I don't know who was running around smashing the things... but it seems like the sort of thing the people here would think of as "cautious".

Better safe than sorry... better... smash the statues, just in case they hurt us.
