Oddly enough, I had a similar conversation with a coworker yesterday. I think I (pleasantly) surprised him with my declaration that a lot of our political/societal problems could be ameliorated by the simple-in-theory course of paying politicians a hell of a lot less than they are paid now. That 'politician' should not be a career, it should be a civil duty that one does for the betterment of one's community (whether that be a town or a state or a country).
For reference, my coworker is probably in his 60's and from India. I'm pretty sure he didn't think that someone my age could think so coherently about politics.
