I'm no expert on retirement and even less in the US but how many years do you have until you can "legally" retire? I don't think many people even consider the option of early retirement these days...with the economy the way it is.
We play the lottery every week...no luck at all so far. LOL
I think I have 8 years to go. With Soc Sec - depending on the year you are born, determines the age of retirement. I think I am going to play the lottery!
My brother insisted he would one day win the lottery. He bought so many lottery tickets with each paycheck, leaving little for other expenses. He did win the lottery, bought the house of his dreams in Florida, paid off all bills. Then his diabetes got out of hand and he had to have his leg amputated. I'm not saying a bad fate follows those who win a lotto. I'm saying, go for it. You never know what's going to happen so you might as well shoot for what seems like a good idea.
I sure do know how you feel. I love my job, but I look forward to when I can retire. That time probably won't come for another 7 or 8 years though. *sigh*
I guess reducing your debt way down is the only way to retire early. Would it be possible for you to work part time, so you get more time at home but still earn a paycheck? What does hubby say about all this?
"Hubby? Well, I'll let you know after I spring it on him :-) "
Hope you are a good sport about this comment. It really did happen. A friend of mine was so tired of working full time for so many years. She told her husband she quit her job and was now going to be a full time housewife and mom. She gave him a gift wrapped box and when he opened it, it was a fake penis with scrotum attached. She said something to the effect, "My gift to you is giving you back your manhood. Support your family."
I would give anything to be able to retire. I was forced into the work field at the ripe old age of 42 when my ex chose his addictions over his family. I was a housewife up until then so yeah I am a bit bitter of having to work outside the home. I am fortunate enough to work for a company that has an actual pension. So that will help my income. I have every intention of retiring in 7.5 yrs at 62 because our company also gives full benefits if you retire at 62. I won't get SS until I am 66 I think. But I think we can survive until then since the house will hopefully be paid for by that time. I will also not be putting gas into my van twice a week just to go to work 55 miles away. Instant increase in income there. So we shall see.
I am not sure of your age but if you can survive in this economy and retire now go for it. I am praying my 401k has recovered when I am ready. That will be the huge IF in my story.
Neither my partner nor I have a retirement fund. It looks like we will be working until the day we die. I don't work now but am 2 yrs away from getting my degree. As you know, we care for her 88 yr old alzheimic dad. When he goes to a nursing home or dies, we plan to downsize to a smaller place. We won't need 11 rooms or all the square footage we have. That will be a nice amt put aside each month. The stock market did a job and then some on his portfolio so we have no idea if there will be much left in the retirement fund left to us. If I stayed in the unhappy 28 yr old hetero marriage retirement would not be a problem at all....but as we all know there is more to life than dollar signs. It's a guessing game and I don't have any idea what would be a good path to take.
