Donghae had been bugging Sungmin about it for a while, maybe a few weeks.
“Everyone knows how to ride a bike in school, Hyung! Everyone!” And he wasn’t joking either. His best friends Hyukjae and Kibum both knew how to ride a two-wheeler. They showed up to school every day riding beside their mothers on their ‘grown up’ bikes. Kim Ryeowook, the youngest, smallest guy in the in the class could bike circles around Donghae any day! And even most of the girls in his class could ride a bike! He doesn’t count Amber though, since she’s a dude friend.
But every time Donghae would ask his older brother to teach him, Sungmin would reply with a short, “I’m busy.” And continue talking on the phone to his best friend, Heechul.
But that didn’t stop Donghae from asking. He just needed to ask at a crucial point.
So one day, when Heechul had come over, Donghae had waited a few minutes after the two had retreated into Sungmin's room before barging in- Which he was forbidden to do when Heechul was over - and demanded that Sungmin teach him how to ride a bike.
The two teens froze on the bed as Donghae barged in. Heechul laughed as he got up from hugging Sungmin- Leaving the younger boy pouting- and went to pick Donghae up.
Everyone in the family knew that Sungmin's best friend had a soft spot for his baby brother. So it wasn’t surprising when he told the little boy, “If you wanted to learn riding, you should have asked me, Hae.” He said grinning.
Heechul turned to Sungmin, who was still on the bed, pouting. “Come on Minnie, it’ll be fun.”
And that’s how Sungmin finally gave in to his little brother.
It took an hour to find and clean up Sungmin's old bike- Donghae was so glad it wasn’t pink like Sungmin's current bike- before the two boys could actually get to teaching.
Donghae remembers the shakiness of the contraption and feeling like he would fall at any moment.
For the first while, Sungmin held onto the back of the seat as he pedaled, Heechul throwing him instructions as he tried to follow them out.
When he slowly got used to it, Sungmin let him go, and he raced down the side walk. Donghae screamed as he came to the curb, going way too fast, “HOW DO YOU TURN!? HOW DO YOU TURN?!”
Neither of the teens got to answer as Donghae stopped peddling and slammed his foot against the pavement in an attempt to stop. The still spinning pedals hit Donghae in the back of the ankle and he flew over the handle bars, falling to the floor tangled in the bike.
“Oh my god! Are you okay!?” Sungmin yelled frantically, pulling his brother from the mess.
“Didn’t we tell you to use the brakes when you want to stop?!” Heechul barked out, making Donghae grimace.
“I-I’m sorry!”
Sungmin and Heechul sighed. “Alright, let’s go again.” Sungmin suggested, “This time, keep peddling, keep your feet on the pedals and keep your hand over the brakes. Don’t stop the bike with your feet.”
After Sungmin had finished instructing, Donghae scrambled back onto the bike, gripping the handles tightly. He took a deep breath and started pedaling again.
Two days later, Donghae met Hyukjae and Kibum on the road. His two best friends were surprised when Donghae showed up on a bike, but that just made it more fun for them.
“It’s about time you learned!” Hyukjae commented, earning a tongue from Donghae.
“I’ll race you!” Donghae suggested, and the three boys rode off to school.
