He’s so cute.
Eight-year-old Lee Hyukjae watches his neighbor from his seat by the window.
“He’s so cute, Minnie.” He says dreamily to his best friend, Lee Sungmin.
“You say that all the time, Hyukkie.” The little boy replies dramatically, playing with Hyukjae’s stuffed monkey.
Hyukjae turns away from the window to look at Sungmin with big eyes. “But it’s true! He’s cute and nice and plays sports really good and dances like people on T.V. and has a nice smile-“ The younger boy continues rambling about Lee Donghae, the boy next door, and his long-time friend and crush.
Hyukjae and Donghae didn’t really spend time together at school, they had different teachers, but Donghae’s mom would babysit Hyukjae sometimes, and the two boys, although completely different from one another, had become good friends. Soon, Hyukjae found his feelings towards Donghae become different. He asked Sungmin what they could be and after describing them, his friend had bluntly told him: “Well, that just means you like him, right?”
Sungmin rolls his eyes and turns on the T.V. He’s heard the same thing many times, he wouldn’t miss anything.
“Sungmin!” Hyukjae yells, jumping in front of the T.V, blocking the older boy’s view.
“What!?”
“Sungminnie, I seriously might like him!”
Sungmin lets out a long breath, exasperated, “Then tell him that!”
“… How do I do that?”
“I don’t know… umm,” Sungmin crosses his arms in thought. “I got it!” He snaps his fingers in triumph, or, at least he tries to. “Kiss him!”
Hyukjae felt his mouth fall open. “WHAT?!?”
Sungmin nods his head in approval to his own idea. “Well, when daddy tells mommy he loves her, he kisses her, and sometimes, when Kyuhyunnie stays over, and he thinks I’m a sleep, he says, ‘I love you Sungminnie.’ and kisses me. So if you kiss someone, it means you love them right? So he’ll know then.”
Hyukjae takes a while to process the other’s words. “I-I guess you’re right.” There’s a pause where Hyukjae seems to shrink into himself. “But I’ve never kissed anyone….”
“It’s not that hard! You just put your lips on theirs!” Sungmin tries explaining but the younger boy just looks at him blankly. “Fine,” he finally says with a sigh, “You can practice… on me…”
Hyukjae’s eyes light up. “Really?!”
“Of course!” the older boy replies, placing his hands on Hyukjae’s shoulders. “You’re my best friend!”
Hyukjae grins back timidly, moving closer to his best friend. “So… how do we…?”
“Um… you just…” Sungmin pushes his head closer to Hyukjae’s and held the younger boy’s hands. “You press your lips…”
Finally, after many awkward movements, Hyukjae feels Sungmin's lips on his own. The feeling was weird. The two boys didn’t move at all, just stood there, stiff, with their lips pressed against each others.
“Sungminnie! I came to get- YAH! Lee Hyukjae! What are you doing to my baby?!”
Hyukjae suddenly feels Sungmin getting pulled away from him and he sees an angry set of eyes glaring at him.
“Kyuhyunnie!” Sungmin whines, looking up at his childhood friend who was holding onto possessively.
“Ch-Cho Kyuhyun! What are you doing in my house!?” Hyukjae stutters (He’d never tell Sungmin, since he thinks he friend would be offended, but Kyuhyun really intimidates him.)
“Your mom let me in,” The youngest boy says smugly, staking his tongue out at Hyukjae. “What were you doing to my baby?” Kyuhyun called Sungmin his baby. Hyukjae never bothered asking why. It had something to do with him liking Sungmin a lot.
“We were kissing.” Sungmin says bluntly, smiling up at the younger boy.
“WHAT?! WHY?!”
“I’m helping Hyukkie practice.”
“But-But I’m supposed to be your first kiss!”
Sungmin stares blankly at the younger boy. “What are you talking about Kyuhyunnie? You were my first kiss. You kiss me lots of times. When you think I’m sleeping.” Sungmin grins maliciously at Kyuhyun, “I only kissed Hyukkie once.”
Kyuhyun freezes and a bright red blush creeps onto his face. Sungmin wasn’t supposed to be awake! Shoot.
The next day, Hyukjae can’t sit still in his seat. It was the day he’d finally kiss his crush.
“Calm down.” Sungmin told him.
The younger boy looks at the clock mounted on the wall behind the teachers desk.
He and Donghae are in different classes so he has to wait till recess to see him, but as the hour hand of the clock got closer ten, Hyukjae got nervous.
“I-I can’t do it.” He sighs regretfully.
During morning recess he spent the time playing with Sungmin on the jungle gym.
Sometimes he’d sneak peeks at Donghae playing soccer with other boys from his class.
“When are you gonna kiss him?” Sungmin would ask now and then, but Hyukjae ignores him.
Morning recess passed like that. Lunch came and went. Hyukjae still hadn’t kissed his crush.
During afternoon recess, Hyukjae played by himself. Sungmin was helping their teacher with some other students, so Hyukjae played by himself at the back of the playground where all the trees grew tall, trying to make things out of the flowers that grew there. He was humming quietly to himself when a shadow fell over him.
Hyukjae looked up and blushed immediately. It was Donghae.
He stared quietly, and slightly nervous, as the younger boy sat down in the grass beside him. Donghae had a frown on his face, and frankly, it just made the older boy even more nervous than he was.
“Wh-what is it?” Hyukjae stammered, scooting back when the younger boy moved closer.
“Eunhyukkie, don’t you like me?” Hyukjae blushed again, partly because of Donghae’s words, and partly because of the nickname. Donghae had started calling him “Eunhyuk” one day while Hyukjae was being baby sat. Hyukjae didn’t know why, but he didn’t complain, because Sungmin told him that if someone calls you by a nick name, it means you’re close.
“It’s not that-“
Hyukjae’s eyes widen when Donghae suddenly kissed him. It was only a second, but it left the older boy flustered.
“B-But why?’
“I saw you kiss that girly-boy yesterday!” Donghae exclaimed frowning. “Do you like him better than me?
“What?!”
Donghae seemed to realize he said something he didn’t want to say and blushed red. “I-I- My ball f-fell into your lawn and when I went to get it I just saw you! It-it’s not like I was trying to look at you on purpose or anything!”
There was an awkward silence while both boys sat under the tree, avoiding looking at each other.
“He-Sungminnie was just helping me practice…” Hyukjae finally said.
“Why?”
“’Cause Sungminnie says that when you like someone, you kiss them! But I never kissed anyone and I didn’t wanna mess up!” Hyukjae peeks at the other boy before turning back to his shoes.
“Wh-who were you gonna kiss?” Donghae asks, unconsciously scooting closer to the older boy.
“Umm… you…”
Donghae looks surprised at the Hyukjae and moved even closer. “Then why didn’t you?” He asks.
Hyukjae looks up and gets startled by Donghae’s sudden closeness.
Hyukjae contemplates for a second before mustering up all his courage and pecking Donghae on the lips. He buries his face in his hands right afterwards.
The older boy feels his face heat up when Donghae stays silence, almost regretting ever kissing him.
“So… does that mean you like me.” Hyukjae finally hears Donghae ask. He nods mutely.
Donghae grins before kissing Hyukjae on the cheek, where his hand didn’t cover skin. He hugs the older boy tightly.
“Good. ‘Cause I like you too, Eunhyukkie!”
