Guriel remembers life before God sent the angels to Earth; he remembers Heaven, the security of being surrounded by his family, and the task for which his Father created him -- to protect human beings as a Guardian. He also has some happy memories of life on Earth before the first angels were enslaved; however, these memories are distant and painful, overshadowed by his experiences as a slave. Guriel and his brother Toviel were captured together during the early days of the angel trade, and the pair were forcibly separated.
Because of his tenacity and combative nature, Guriel was seen as an ideal candidate for the angel-fighting pits that began to spring up. Most of his enslavement was spent there, being forced to battle his brothers for human amusement. It wasn't all bad; Guriel was gregarious by nature, and he thrived on the ability to live in close quarters with other angels, even if the price for that was terribly high. During this part of his life Guriel injured many other angels and killed a total of four: one accidentally, two in evenly matched fights, and one (who was a better fighter than he) in 1837, during the last fight he ever participated in. After this fight Guriel tried to escape, was recaptured, and had his right wing broken and maimed as punishment.
Following this fight, Guriel's life took a turn for the worse. Because he refused to fight any longer, he was sold away from the pits and into general circulation, but his anger and rebelliousness often infuriated his masters and he was punished for them as well as frequently resold. With every successive return to the block, his value dropped. Coupled with his guilt over the things he'd done as a fighter and his loneliness at no longer living among other angels, this took a heavy emotional toll on him. The 19th century made Guriel "damaged goods" in more ways than one; many of his masters tried unsuccessfully to have his wing repaired, using only crude medical techniques that caused immense suffering and further damage until it was finally deemed irreparable.
The downward spiral of Guriel's life was briefly interrupted when he was set free by Greg House, who was looking for Guriel's brother Mikhel and offered to free him in exchange for information. This freedom was short-lived; Guriel was recaptured by a group of unscrupulous Hunters who sold him to contacts of theirs in the Black Market, and these contacts shipped him to Los Angeles, where he was sold again to a married couple by the name of Lockwood.
The Lockwoods were killed soon afterwards in a car crash, and Guriel was left to their son Ben along with all their other belongings. While Ben Lockwood was MIA in Afghanistan at the time, Guriel remained (quite literally) in storage until Lockwood was found as a POW and returned to the States. Stunned by the revelation that his parents had left him a living, thinking being as an inheritance, Lockwood (a werewolf) set Guriel free.
While at first he doubted the lycanthrope's motivations, Guriel has gradually grown to trust him as a friend, and is now trying to feel out what it means to live as a truly free person for the first time in centuries. He shares a household with Lockwood, Zev (the wolf half of Lockwood's persona), and two of his sisters -- Ananchel and Kabniel. Ferociously devoted to this fragile family/Pack, Guriel will do anything to protect them (up to and including killing Hunters who have come too close, though he has had some moral qualms over this). He has recently begun looking into medical procedures to possibly recover some use in his bad wing.
