He really did intend to take care of Ben himself. Ben is all he's got left in the world, the least Guriel can do is make sure he makes it through the horrible process of withdrawal. He should be able to deal with this; compared to months and months of senseless slaughter and hopeless searching, this should be easy.
But then the withdrawal symptoms started in earnest. And it's not easy. It may be harder than living without Ben, than not knowing if Ben was alive or dead.
He feels like a failure, like a wreck, like a disappointment (again). But Ben needs more help than Guriel can give him, more care than the empty, silent house with its bare cupboards can provide.
Which is how they end up at the safehouse, quartered in one of the rooms in the basement where it's quiet and dark and safe and far, far away from every sibling that Guriel has failed and disappointed and hurt.
