Devil's backbone, buffalo ridge, muddy creek, thunder hill - that whole region used to have so much of a haunted feel to it. Just a few miles from everything, and it felt like being in a horror movie.

As high school kids we used to go out driving that strip at night, or park somewhere and wander about. It was one of the neatest places in this area. Weird stuff always happened, and the feeling of isolation always made it so much more exciting.

Now it is mostly newly built sub-divisions, like every strip of fields, park or forest has become around here. There was indisputably a spirit to that area, now it is dead under a pile of orange brick and matching mailboxes.
