There was more damage than just the fuel line, Marty ripped up the under carriage escaping from the Indians. No spare parts either.

Possibly true, but they were able to repair it enough to get it started - briefly - using the alcohol from the bar. So it would seem that the biggest problem was the lack of fuel.
