we do not see rats under our bird feeder just chipmunks-do you live in a city area? I have seen only rats in downtown areas not a suburb area.

Rats are by nature nocturnal and elusive (sneaky) so they may be there even though you never see them.
I live in what could be called a suburban area in northern San Diego county
While certainly more city than country, we have some animal remnants of the farming days of the area like raccoons, opossums, skunks, ground squirrels, etc. - though less and less animals are around each year as more open land is turned into housing and such and natural habitat is paved over.
I enjoy and leave food for the raccoons and other larger animals,
but that invariably leads to spillage for the rodents.
Rats and mice are not yet inside my house
but I don't want to wait for that to happen so I'm taking action now.

I just remembered we have had problems with field mouse's lately-we had out to our house and exterminator who set out poison-I found three field mouse's on our garage floor last month after the poison was set out-we do also have raccoons, possums, squirrels etc. . . skunks, rabbits, wild turkeys, deer. Years ago once I was walking downtown and saw a huge rat run across a city street. Also once a long time ago when we were in seminary Jackson Miss. living in a suburb I saw a huge rat in our neighbors trash. I had a cousin who had white rats for pet's. I personally find rats to give me the creeps. peace
