I will, however, apply at my current uni and then seek a transfer - at least that way I am assured of getting in, and assured of proving to other universities that I am worthy of the task.
This sounds good. At the risk of sounding like I know anything about you when clearly I really don't, if ever there was someone who needed to join the party in the Ivory Tower, it's you babe. Come back in where it's relatively safe (in comparison to the rest of the world).
Now I teach (writing mostly, and communications, and a class for graduate teaching fellows), and I work individually with first-generation students as part of a grant program (though that part of my job is likely to end in a few weeks), but, for the bulk of my job, I work as a faculty developer for our Teaching Effectiveness Program -- which means that I consult with faculty (individually, through their departments, or in workshops) regarding ways to improve their teaching (my areas being mostly writing across the curriculum, inclusive teaching, diversity issues, learner-centered teaching, transformative education, democratic classrooms, collaborative learning, etc.).
I used to direct a first-year seminar program (that was heavy in multiculturalism and writing) and, before that, I directed a university writing center.
Very glam, I know. I have a very small office now, but with a nice view.
