the end of spam?

To my big surprise, the spam problem seems to be getting better, and it's not due to better spam filters or captchas, but rather to crackdowns on botnets. I do remember that it used to be worse.

of course, the proliferation of mail filters, along with a maturing audience and the shift to subscribed web services (facebook, &c.), means that there is also much less financial incentive to build out a new generation of botnets…

I feel, however, like I've been lately getting a lot more mail that isn't spam, but isn't meant for me, either. The email analogue of honest "wrong numbers" on the telephone.
