Boots are easy. Leather needs to bit a bit snug around the width of the foot. When they walk their heel should lift between half to an inch. If the heel doesn't lift, it's too tight. more than that and it's too loose.
And ALWAYS have them try boots on with boot socks with the extra padding on the bottom and heel of their feet.
