I have written down a list of points, to help make the time in Algebra 1 more worthwhile for everyone. They are basically something like this:
1. A day without a tactile mathematical experience is a day wasted.
2. Abstraction grows through concrete experience.
3. Mastery of symbolic manipulation does not equal understanding.
4. Less talk, more action.
5. More math in historical context.
Mostly I am going to focus in on giving the students who are not ready for abstraction more tactile experiences, because the research seems to say that that's what will help the most, (apart from time) and the students who are ready can have some interesting experiences where we will integrate math and where and why it came about. And every one is to understand! Not just imitate and memorize.
That's the nutshell. I ate the nut. It was a Brazil nut. And that's a hard nut to crack.

I also was shocked and annoyed to get to Algebra II and find that Algebra I had been a lie. How are you going to fix this situation?
