I keep lusting for a Mac, but I've also really become enamored with the tablet option. Were Apple to make one, with the multi-touch display of the iPhone, I would be in geek heaven. Hopefully, that will be coming in a few years.
There is a very nice Macbook to Tablet conversion out there, but it's to a slate-style tablet, not the convertible-style that retains the keyboard. Tis too bad.
And no, while very impressive, I don't think Ubuntu is in any way preferable to OSX. Except maybe for the geek points. :)

I've been back-and-forth about the idea of touchscreen MacOS, and I'm not yet convinced that it's worthwhile. It would be neat-o, but I can't see how it wouldn't be more fatiguing than a keyboard interface for protracted use.
What do you use?

If I had been ordering online, I would buy from OWC; and, as to whether to buy internal or external, the only sensible answer to me is 'both'.
If your allotted money allows, buy a larger internal hard drive as well as a large enough external with enough room for a backup plus a bit more storage.
If you really don't have enough for two drives, just buy an external drive, large enough for your storage needs as well as backup.
The other issue worth investigating is whether to buy a more expensive, svelte 2.5" external, or whether to buy a cheap 3.5" drive and put it in an external enclosure. The latter solution is bulky, but much cheaper if cost is an issue. It allowed me 300 gb of backup space.
I hope that all of this helps.
