Character: Guy Cecil/Gailardia Galan Gardios
Series: Tales of the Abyss
Deviance: 1

Age: 21
Gender: Male
Species: Human

Appearance: Guy looks like this He stands at 184 cm (6'1/2") and weighs 79 kg (174 lbs) and generally smiles a lot.

Psychology: Guy's a complex one. His initial motives for becoming Luke's servant were anything but altruistic. He wanted revenge on House Fabre, and he was going to start that revenge by killing the Duke's family, starting with Luke. Somewhere along the line that... Changed. It takes most of the game for him to acknowledge and deal with his anger issues (and even by the end of the game he admits he has lingering bitterness and issues) yet even at the start of the game his hatred is conflicting with a life time of living with and raising someone he supposedly means to kill.

All of this rage and bitterness is pretty background stuff to Guy though. It's there, but it's not in the limelight. His main personality that people see--something that's both real and a bit of a facade, is a caring older brother type. Someone who really looks out for everyone, knows how to say the right things to make people feel better. He's the person who's always perceptive to everyone else's emotional state, and while he's not one to pry exactly, he won't let problems lie if he thinks they're serious. He respects people's privacy, but he'll also make judgment calls on when to push someone to share what's bothering them. He's caring, gentle, the kind of perfect brother figure/confidant.

He's usually really laid back and easy going, very friendly and calm. He can't seem to say no to most innocent or mundane requests, no matter how inconvenient, and so he ends up going out of his way for people. Maybe it's from living as a servant for so many years, but he seems to take ungainly situations with little more than a sigh or protest and with general good grace and good humor. In fact, good humor is a big part of his personality--he laughs things away, cheers people up, and is surprisingly optimistic about things for someone with a past like his. Most of the way he bonds to people is by looking after them, which does tend to leave a little distance between him and those he adopts, since he takes the role of caretaker, but between those that earn his trust on a more equal level he is more open. And while he reserves a lot of thoughts to himself, he's also not particularly dishonest in how he feels, not directly, though he'll mask and deflect over burdening others. A life long habit partly built out of surviving in an enemy household.

Because of trauma involving his sister's death he's frankly terrified of women getting close. He will freak out if a girl touches him, though he likes girls quite well. He's severely gynophobic, and while he's beginning to slowly work with the memories and experiences that left him that way, he still has trouble being near women except in a crisis.

He's popular with the ladies because of his way with words, one of his more oblivious spots. He's also a complete geek about technology, another blind spot. Both of these can and do get him in mild trouble now and then, though usually the one with the ladies.

In general Guy is just very perceptive and aware, smart, but of course not so much so he doesn't make mistakes or miss things. Sometimes very major things. He lives his life optimistically for someone planning a life of bloody revenge, possibly because one thing he knows too intimately is that the dead don't come back. Life is important and precious to him, a contributing factor in his hesitation over his desire to kill Luke. Of course, genuine fondness for the kid he's raised, and for other enemies (Natalia, heir to Kimlasca's throne is another friend) make his initial chosen path seem less appealing.

Guy's the type of man to continue with unwavering loyalty to those he places his faith in, one of his bigger strengths. Another is his perceptiveness. One of his biggest weaknesses is his difficulty in being honest about his feelings, though he's been working on it to an extent. Going hand in hand with that, is that he is fairly passive--he's not used to being the one making decisions, and while he'll speak up if something seems wrong to him, and he's far from a blind follower, he will generally let others take the lead instead of doing so himself.

By the end of the game he's resolved a lot of issues for himself--his stance of vengeance and clinging to the past, versus fighting for the future. His decisions and friendships despite his heredity. He's even started to be more assertive, in little ways, speaking up more about his own feelings, and being more open about his thoughts. Though even he admits he's not entirely without lingering feelings, he seems to have resolved most of his resentment, and the changes are subtle but definite.

Other Skills/Abilities: A list of Guy's Artes. All of his artes are basically sword fighting techniques, with some fonic abilities thrown in a few of them, and one or two status boosting and healing abilities.

Fonons are the bonds that hold atoms together in Auldrant, blah blah explanations, basically using fonons is a bit like having magic. Guy is not a Seventh Fonist (healers in his world) but he can heal himself. For some reason. Neither is he a fonic artist (basically a magician), but Mystic Artes and arcane Artes of his sometimes use elemental based properties, akin to additional magic damage. He's trained in the Sigmund style of swordsmanship, which focuses on chaining quick, light attacks over more powerful slower ones.

Aside from being a skilled fighter, Guy has many domestic abilities and applications!

Guy makes a great nanny, baby sitter, tutor, and all around mom! Get one for your kids today!

Due to his background, Guy lived the better part of his life raising Luke (two different Lukes as it turned out) and being a servant in a royal household. Because of this his skills at domestic chores are quite impeccable, from laundry, cleaning, bathing, home repair, even a bit of gardening he's skilled in pretty much all domestic tasks and he's even a pretty good cook! He's great with kids, having essentially raised two of them, and is your typical multi-tasking vengeance-bent assassin posing as Mister Mom.

While he may be good at domestic chores, his two passions are his swordwork and fontech. That's right, he's a total tech geek. Not only does he know a lot about fonmachines, he's good with them. While it's only been a hobby for him in his spare time, he's enthusiastic and apparently fairly naturally skilled in engineering--it's not his formal area of study but he learns quick and has the drive and passion to learn a lot about machinery of all types.

And if that wasn't enough he's also a great swimmer, skilled and certified in aquatic rescue.

And he even makes a good dog rappig walker.

Is there anything he can't do? Apparently he has a hard time saying no. Take advantage of it.

Also he's great at exposition and explaining... anything. Maybe a career in teaching is in his future.

Other Weaknesses: He really dislikes lemon =(

History: Guy's Wiki. General story outline.

Canon Point: A few months post-game.

Reality Description: See username.

No? Fine. Let's start with the overall basics of the world of Auldrant. There are three major political factions in Auldrant; the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, ruled by King Ingobert VI, the Empire of Malkuth, ruled by Emperor Peony Upala Malkuth IX, and the Order of Lorelei, currently without a leader, though Anise Tatlin has ambitions to be the first female Fon Master--the religious leaders of the Order, a bit like being the Pope. The seat of power for Kimlasca is the City of Light, Baticul, for Malkuth the water city Grand Chokmah. The Order of Lorelei is based on it's own volcanic island, and the main base of the order is the Holy City Daath.

Before the events of the game the world was ruled by something known as the Score, a record of the planet's memories from the beginning of the world to it's end. The Order of Lorelei would read the Score for people to lead them on the correct path, but all that is defunct now as the Score no longer exists. Which has lead to some political unrest and a lot of unhappy people. On the upside, because of the Score being destroyed, the two nations of Kimlasca and Malkuth have been able to set aside centuries of war and establish peace with one another.

And just in time. Despite the events of the game being over, the world still suffers troubles. The Order of Lorelei is undergoing restructuring, leaving the religious balance of power unstable. There are a number of homeless replicas that need to be given homes, and in general the world is recovering from a succession of near catastrophes.

All the upheaval aside, Auldrant isn't quite like earth. There are similarities, foods and livestock, but many differences as well. Monsters and strange creatures that exist only on Auldrant rub elbows with ordinary apple trees and cows. Even the basic components of matter and life are both similar and different--atoms make up all things, but Fonons, sound frequencies, hold these atoms together. Genetics and DNA work theoretically the same, however.

This map is a good reference for the geography of Auldrant. Deserts and snowbound mountains, volcanoes, forests, plains, vast oceans, ordinary geography all exist in Auldrant, with the addition of more fantastical things--like a mushroom forest.

Guy has traveled all over the world, and lived in several different cities. Most recently he's made his home in Grand Chokmah, which is known for it's stunning artificial waterfalls and beautiful architecture. He has taken his place in the Malkuth House of Lords, as a Count, though the lands of Hod which traditionally belonged to his family no longer exist.

People of note to Guy:

Most of the people important to him are scattered across the globe dealing with the political ramifications of the events of the game. He himself serves Emperor Peony in whatever capacity he's required--whether it be walking rappigs or serving as a messenger or ambassador. Jade, one of his traveling companions, is a military leader of Malkuth. Princess Natalia, from Kimlasca, could be considered one of Guy's childhood friends, and an important political figure. Asch the Bloody was the son of the noble responsible for Guy's family's execution, he was something of a childhood friend to Guy (in a complicated way) and was killed in action. Luke fon Fabre, Asch's replica and Guy's best friend, is still considered missing. Anise Tatlin and Tear Grants, two other taveling companions, are busy attempting to restructure the Order of Lorelei. Meiu, a cheagle, is back with his clan. Van Grants, Guy's childhood friend and mentor (in the same way Guy is for Luke) is dead.

Also of note is Pere, the man who raised Guy from when he was young. He remained in Baticul to tend to Duke fon Fabre's gardens. The engineer Aston and the scientist Spinoza work in Sheridan and Belkend respectively, and are two men who's knowledge and ability in their fields are considerable.

First Person Speaking Sample: [Trying to hold a struggling rappig while simultaneously being transported to the Plane are not the most ideal of circumstances in which to retain one's dignity, something Guy quickly discovers as he lands on his ass in the middle of apparently... Actually he has no idea.]

[But the rappig takes precedence as she leaps from his arms, waddling off. No time for gawking at... Where is he anyway?]

Nephry! [Guy scrambles to his feet, chasing the pig and catching her again, this time by the collar.]

Stay still girl. [He frowns at the panicked grunts, kneeling to absently pet her ears as he looks around more.] I don't know where we are either, but you can't rush off like that. If I lost you here the Emperor really would kill me, please be good.

But this is weird. [His voice takes on a more musing tone, as he ends up thinking aloud at the rappig. Who is she going to tell, after all? Jade and Gelda? He's not worried.] I've never seen a place like this before. I'd remember it.

And we didn't get here normally. It can't have been... Hyperresonance? [He squashes that hope before it blooms.] Doesn't look like Eldrant though. And I don't see Luke. [Guy smiles at the rappig, as if reassuring the animal when he's the one feeling uneasy.]

Don't worry Nephry, we'll figure out what's going on. Just stick with me. Haha...

[Talking to a rappig. He really has spent too much time with Peony.]

Third Person Writing Sample: He didn't have the time. None of them had the time. There was no time to spare, these days, with all the chaos to tidy up. Running back and forth from Grand Chokmah to Baticul, from Baticul to Belkend and Sheridan, and then from there to Daath. Playing messenger, getting reports, seeing friends and then returning to Malkuth only to head right back out again.

Everyone was busy. It wasn't that Guy minded, it needed to be done. The replicas deserved a place of their own, and talks about where to put them, how to house them, those didn't happen over night. Not to mention the restructuring of the Order was of grave concern to every individual on Auldrant, and there was still the ramifications of the end of the Planet Storm to consider--they had years before they actually felt the effects but that didn't mean they could afford to wait to start research on it.

And of course it all had to happen all at once. No, Guy didn't mind being busy, but... But he decided to be selfish anyway, even with everything going on. It was something he refused to back down on, even for the good of the future of the world.

Because every now and then meetings could happen without him and someone else could play messenger and someone else could be sent to learn the things Guy was supposed to, because every now and then Guy had to go check.

And they let him. Even now, months later, when most everyone else had given up, Guy still came out here to search. Sometimes Tear or Natalia or one of the others still joined him, and they hunted the place top to bottom--as far as they could get, turning over stones that had been turned over a thousand times, crawling through ruins that no one should be alive in. No one could have survived Eldrant's fall.

But they came back anyway. Guy came back anyway. Every chance he got, every spare moment he could grab--and when there weren't spare moments, which was common now, he made time, or took time. He'd beg, borrow or steal time, if he had to, to come check.

Guy tried not to think of what he was doing. If he thought about it, he'd have to apply logic and rationality. He didn't want to do that. He spent a lot of his waking hours being rational, and logical and reasonable and calm. When it came to this, he refused. He would be as emotionally irrational as he damn well pleased. He had faith and that's all that fueled him. It wasn't even hope, because he didn't have that, not after the first month.

But he clung to faith in the same way he'd once clung to revenge. With the same stubborn, dogged, single-minded determination that had led somewhere he'd never have been able to imagine back then.

So Guy came out here, and he searched. Because Luke had promised him something, and Guy had believed that promise, and logic and rationality and sense could go hang themselves.

He would take time for this, whether there was time to take or not, because it was important.

Did you read the rules? Yep~
