My Books, My Way (with long-winded preface)

Yeah, I know the meme's instructions.
"List 15 books you've read that will always stick with you, the first fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. Don't take too long to think about it, and don't worry too much about forgetting favorites -- just put what pops into your head."

make with the clicky to see long-winded preface and list )

Dude, I have plenty of highly intellectual friends (UC Berkeley grad students, mostly) whose bookcases are full of fantasy novels and all sorts of geeky things. Half the stuff we love to read we also chuckle about regarding its pulpiness and various faults (e.g. Dresden files) but still, it makes for great escapism and funtimes recounting our favorite scenes or inserting jokes based on them into conversation.... I guess what I'm saying is, the world is full of intellectuals who enjoy "B-movie" quality kitsch in their fiction reading, particularly in the fantasy and sf genres, so in fact, if I were an intellectual who simply didn't care for these genres, I'd be far more insecure about that fact than I am as one who is happy to wear my nerdiness loud and proud! Imagine going to a party of geeky Google types and not knowing your Star Trek from your Star Wars (or worse, thinking it's pronounced "Star Track")! The horror!!! Lucky for us that we aren't one of those poor lost souls...

Valid and much appreciated moral support. However, my insecurities compel me to point out that I'm not ashamed of nor afraid to fly my geek flag. My issue is more around the lack of having read much of anything else.
