[ First you see his smile, up close, drawing further and further away, until he settles down in front the fansuwoth, hands busying themselves with ink and a brush, and obviously a sketch he's been working with. His gaze is on the paper that is laid out on a low table, he is kneeling on tatami, dressed in a simple dark yukata. ]For a while now, I've ( Read more... )

[Kanji's eyes light up at the picture. He's pointedly ignoring the stuff about entertaining in favor of it.]

Another guy who paints... You're good! I dunno if you could use me, but I wouldn't mind posing, so long-- as it don't interfere with when I'm working.

[He almost said something else there, and his cheeks are colored brightly by whatever the thought was. Nudes are a part of painting; nothing weird there, right? If the guy even wants that sort of thing.]

You're an artist? [ Sai pauses at this statement completely and directs all his attention to the fansuwoth, curiously. ]

I'd appreciate your help. I'm aiming to draw a wide variety of different people. It's hardly practicing otherwise.

[ A beat, and a smile. ]

Naturally I wouldn't want to disturb anyone's work.

Well, I ain't all that good at painting, but it's fun. I like it. I'm... I make things!

Clothes and dolls; stuff like that.

[Kanji takes a moment to scramble for one of his dolls. It's a knit doll made up like a Heian courtesan, and each layer of clothes is exquisitely and intricately made.]

I don't really know if it makes me an artist or nothin' but... [He shrugs.] I'm glad to help.

[ He studies the doll through the fansuwoth curiously. Then smiles up at the man holding it. ]

That is quite well done. I like the detailed feel of it.

Yeah, people like that I make 'em with a lot of detail. I just... put in what you want out, right? They don't seem finished otherwise.

I suppose it wouldn't be as dear to you if you had not put in as much effort as you do. And the result would be haphazard. That's what separates you from the rest of them.

I get the first part all the way. But do you know a lot of people who make dolls?
