Title: Shooting Stars
Author: ingvild
Characters: VFM Darlian, Heero
Rating/Word Count: PG, 493
Notes: Because my first one was a bit cheating. I’m not too happy with this one either; it was more a Mr. Darlian&Relena story.

He thinks he’s been to space at least fourteen times the last month, but he’s never seen more than the hotel room and the conference room. Bringing Relena along in order to spend more time with her is proving to be a futile effort. He can’t blame her for being upset that on this trip, which was supposed to include some special father-daughter time, she had to walk around alone all day, and the only time they actually got to spend together was during breakfast and on the shuttle to and from Earth.

So far, he has been able to shelter her from the importance of his work. Relena is too clever. If she knew what his meetings were about, she would easily figure out just how dire the situation is threatening to become. For the time being, he will try to keep protecting her innocence.

“Father, what is that?” Relena’s voice snaps him out of his musings, and he looks out the window of the shuttle to see something that vaguely resembles a meteor.

No. Not that. Not yet.

Go away, he thinks at the thing. Go away and let us have our life in peace. But he knows that it is a futile wish. Peace is much more than just an absence of war, and the Colonies have not known peace for a long time, twenty years, ever since the death of Heero Yuy.

He is vaguely surprised that the Earth has not exploded into a raging fireball by the time they touch ground. As the final days before Relena’s birthday pass, he comes to realise that Operation Meteor is not the horrible, destructive, genocidal plan that was described in the reports he’s seen. The colonies, or rather the people behind sending the Gundams to Earth, are so far limiting their attacks to military targets.

His wife is wondering about this new boy at school who Relena is so fascinated by. He dismisses it as a childish crush. His wife points out that Relena doesn’t seem to have a romantic fascination, just a general fascination.

It’s not until Relena’s birthday party that he realises that he should have been paying attention to Relena’s seemingly innocent questions about markings on space suits and boys with L1 accents (which Relena only can identify due to having been to the cluster so many times) getting student visas.

Part of him is telling him that there aren’t any privately owned cars on the colonies, and that it’s ridiculous that a young boy would know how to drive one - Relena must have been mistaken about the accent.

Another part of him is caught up by the name ‘Heero Yuy’, whispered by Relena’s classmates who are still astonished at her abrupt departure.

He wanted to shelter her, but it seems that the war has caught up with his precious child without him wanting it to. He may have to let her in on some family secrets soon.
