First, there was Mama. Mama worked long hours but always had time to be there for Mariemaia. Mama was pretty and kind, and she would wash Mariemaia’s hair and sing to her and help her put on clothes and make food and hug her and tell her that she was the most precious being in the entire Earth Sphere, and even the anti-meteor batteries couldn’t keep Mama away from her Mariemaia. Sometimes, uncle Trowa would come by, and he would pick Mariemaia up and toss her into the air so high that she thought she could almost touch the hull of the colony. Mama would always smile every time uncle Trowa came to visit.
Sometimes, grandpa Dekim would come by. Mama’s face would grow hard and she would tense up and not relax until Dekim left again.
One day, Mama wasn’t there anymore. Mariemaia sat and waited, and waited, but Mama didn’t come. Instead, Dekim came and told her that Mama was gone and not coming back, and Mariemaia would live with him from now on. And she was in a new family of two.
This family was colder. Dekim never smiled or sang or hugged her or told her she was precious. Instead, he told her about the man she didn’t know, the one who had sired her, and he told her that she had a fate, that she was going to rule the entire Earth Sphere. Uncle Trowa still came by, but he said that she was too big to be tossed into the air now. He still smiled at her, though, but he never stayed long, and Mariemaia would always look after him when he left, leaving her alone with Dekim.
One day, Dekim told her that uncle Trowa wouldn’t be coming to see her anymore. He had gone to where Mama was.
Her family of two felt lonelier after that.
Her time of ascension came, and Mariemaia thought that it didn’t matter that Dekim acted more like her general than her grandfather, now, because soon the entire Earth Sphere would bow down to her, and she could pick the underling she wanted to be her new family.
It frustrated her that Miss Relena wouldn’t see things from her point of view. What if all other potential brothers and sisters and uncles and aunties were as stubborn? How could she make family with them?
When Dekim shot her, she thought that this time, it was her time to leave someone alone to make a new family.
It didn’t last, though. She lived, and Lady asked her if she wanted to live with her. With no other family, Mariemaia agreed, and she entered a new family of two.
Lady isn’t like Mama. Lady doesn’t hug her often and tell her that she’s precious. But she smiles and nods in approval when Mariemaia does something right, and she frowns and explains things when Mariemaia does something wrong, and every so often, she ruffles Mariemaia’s hair and hums something off-key. Mariemaia quite likes this new family of two...
...but she’s not sure she likes the way that Sally person sometimes looks at them, like she wants to make this a family of three.
