HP is a good brand. It gets my approval! I'd go ahead and Google and see what's the current "BEST" processor for laptops though, if you're into that whole neurotically-checking-over-every-aspect-of-the-computer thang.

Anyway, you totally didn't answer my question of which option I should go with between the two HP laptop variants >:O!!!

Hmmm I'd say no to the MacBooks first. Firstly, the price will rape your wallet clean! Secondly! They haven't really converted all their programs for the new system? So when you're running old programs, it uses Rosetta or something like that and it slows down the system a bit. I doubt its actually really significant, the slowing down. But if you get it I'll steal it from you when you're in Japan.>D!!!

dv1000t series? Although the screen isn't as big, its lighter and the battery-life is <3. Really superficial analysis? :D()But that's what I'd go for?

THINNER IS BETTER. Really. Not only will you save space in your bag, which I assume will be spilling over with I-don't-know-what, it'll just... be thinner.
I wanted to say how it'll save space in your tiny dorm room but haha, it didn't sound too logical?

Oh yeah and I'm sure you already know this but make sure you don't just get an adapter for power (I don't know if Japan uses a different power level/socket? But if they do...) Make sure you get a voltage changer or whatever. =( When I worked at BestBuy some guy came in looking for a voltage changer because he fried his laptop in France using just an adapter. Yeah that sucked for him.
Sorry I talk too much =(
