Book-lined rooms are invariably wonderful, but there are two outdoor places as well: the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine, and the medieval city of York. Even though I've only been to York once, I was very nearly in tears as my family walked along the walls; it was such a shock of home.

My natural place is on the shore of a large body of water. I always feel odd being too far from the ocean.
