I'm actually pretty fond of The Time of the Ghost, which is an odd thing to say about a fairly spooky book that is partially based on the author's horrific real-life childhood. The scene where they're collecting the blood to make the ghost speak is painfully funny to me, for example, and the girls' warped domesticity (such as it is) is filled with the sort of details that hold my interest.

The blood bit is very funny, and the domestic details are sort of strangely fascinating (though shudderingly when the parents come into it). I think I wouldn't mind the grim so much if I didn't also find it confusing. Maybe I just need to reread it more often.
