5 RESONANCE FORM

“I still can’t understand. Please explain again, but more slowly.” Yamada said.

“I told you, resonance form is an individual Lewis structure of a resonance hybrid.” Chii said impatiently.

“…so what is it for?”

“It’s not significant. It just shows that compounds can be represented in many ways, but it’s still that one compound.”

“…”

Chinen sighed. It was really hard teaching Yama-chan.

“Think of it this way,” he started saying. He was searching for a good comparison and luckily, Mirai passed by.

“See Mirai-chan?”

“Yeah?”

“She has many roles like Megu, Seira, Miki and many more but all of them are still Mirai, right?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s just like resonance forms! Compounds can be drawn differently, but it’s still the same compound. That’s why we can draw benzene in two different ways, but still, it’s just benzene.”

“…because it’s just a representation.” Yamada said.

“Exactly!”

4 ELECTRONEGATIVITY

“Electronegativity is the ability of atom to attract electrons in a covalent bond.” Yamada said.

“That’s right!” Chii said excitedly.

“I don’t get it.” And Chii’s enthusiasm vanished.

“What don’t you get?” he asked.

“Uhmm, everything?”

Chii sighed.

“As you said, if an atom is electronegative, it can attract electrons.”

“And that means?”

“That means the more electronegative an atom is, the higher is its ability to attract electrons…”

“And that’s because?”

“That’s just it!”

“Sorry! I can’t really understand!”

“Why are you hiding behind the chair?”

“You’re scary!”

Chii, once again, sighed.

“Okay, let’s put it this way, let’s say boys are electrons and girls are atoms. If a girl is beautiful, she would attract boys, right? So the more beautiful the girl, the more they can attract boys. That’s the same with atoms, the more they are electronegative, the more they attract electrons. Get it?”

Finally, comprehension dawned on Yamada’s face.

“Yeah! So in our class, Mirai is the most electronegative!”

“No way, Umika’s definitely more electronegative!”

3 OCTET RULE

“Just remember Yama-chan, in valence, you can violate its number since you can compromise with charges but in octet, you cannot. You must always follow the octet rule.”

“And the octet rule is?”

“Yama-chan! Don’t you ever read our book?!”

“Not really…”

“Mou, you’re a student! Act like one!”

“Well, I’m also a teenage boy. I easily get distracted!”

Chii gave up. “Octet rule states that bonded atoms tend to possess or share a total of eight valence shell electrons.” Chii said in a monotone voice.

“And..?”

“Just that! It means only eight electrons can fill up a valence orbital!”

“…”

“You don’t understand do you?”

“Uhmm… sorry.”

“Okay…” Chii said, suppressing the urge to throttle Yamada.

“Okay, let’s say you’re an atom. You feel lonely when Mirai isn’t around, right?”

“Yeah…”

“That’s the same with an atom filled up by less than eight valence electrons. When you’re with Mirai, you feel complete right? You feel like you don’t need anything else? That’s octet rule! Atoms only needs eight valence electron as you only need Mirai to feel complete; nothing more, nothing less.”

“I get it! Ow… I feel for them, poor incomplete atoms!”

Chii pounded his head on his desk.

2 ACIDS AND BASES

“Chii, I don’t know how to differentiate acids from bases!”

“Of course.” Chii said, sardonically.

“You’re mean!!!” Yamada pouted.

Chinen didn’t seem to hear him.

“Acids are lone pair acceptor while bases are lone pair donor.” Chii just said.

“Please explain.” Yamada said, and even bowed.

“It’s so simple Yama-chan!”

“It’s simple to you because you’re a genius! I’m not!”

“It’s simple to me because I read!” Chii retorted.

But he still continued,

“Okay, think of it this way, let’s say acid and base is a couple. In that relationship, it’s always base who gives and acid who always accepts.”

“Then acids are selfish! Why is the base the only one giving! In order for a relationship to work, both must give and accept!”

“Yama-chan, they’re compounds! And besides bases gives electrons cause they’re rich in electrons. Acids don’t have an electron to give. And acids don’t really ‘take’ them, it is shared between them so both the acid and base would complete the octet.” Chii explained further.

“Oh, that’s fine then, as long as both of them is happy.”

“Yama-chan, they’re compounds!! They wouldn’t feel happy!!!”

1 BONDS

“Ha! Chii! I studied Intramolecular Forces of Attraction! You can ask me anything, I’m confident I can answer!”

“Yama-chan! The exam is about Intermolecular Forces! Not Intramolecular!”

“Eeeh?!” Yamada’s eyes widen.

“Chii! Teach me!!”

“Fine, you studied intramolecular, right?”

“Yeah, it’s the force of attraction within a molecule.”

“Intermolecular forces are similar only it’s attraction between two molecules, not inside one molecule. There’s dispersion, it’s the attraction between instantaneous dipole-“ Yamada was about to ask a question but Chii went on.

“Just remember that since it is instantaneous, the attraction is weak. Then there’s the dipole-dipole force, it’s a strong attraction since its dipole moment is permanent.”

“So Mirai and I have a dipole-dipole relationship?” Yamada said trying to get the conversation back to his line of understanding.

“Yeah, you can say that. But Umika’s and my relationship is definitely a hydrogen bond. OH.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s a stronger version of a dipole-dipole. Oxygen is electronegative so Hydrogen is bonded to it strongly.”

“Then Mirai is definitely the Oxygen and I’m the Hydrogen.”

“Fine, then Umika is Fluorine and I’m her Hydrogen. Fluorine is more electronegative than Oxygen!”

“That’s cheating! You know more about these things!”

+1 THE RESULT

Their Music class just ended.

“I want to be a bass.” Yamada said to Mirai.

“Ehh? Isn’t it good that you’re a tenor?”

“I think I’m a base, I have a lone heart and I want to donate it. Would you be my acid? Then maybe both of us can complete the octet and have a hydrogen bond. You’re very electronegative, Mirai.”

Chinen heard everything.

“I created a monster.” He deadpanned.

END.
