Mirai smiled when she heard the gates open. She looked at the clock and laughed a little. Her grandchildren were just on time.
It has been very hard and very lonely after Ryosuke had passed away. But a year ago, for her Christmas present, their children Aki, Yuta and Yumi had bought her a house just right next to Aki's house. That way, Aki and his family could take care of her and still, she could be independent. Since then, her grandchildren had taken to going to her house every afternoon. And these visits is what makes her happiest these days.
Yuma and Rai were now in their high school. Rai has, as it seemed to now be a family tradition, entered the entertainment industry. Yuma on the other hand, decided since he was little that he is going to be a doctor. He's a little famous still, being in a family of celebrities, but he wasn't very fond of the attention. It wouldn't be surprising if he had a snobbish image to the public. But that was very far from how Yuma really was. In fact, he is a very sweet boy. He is very mature and cares deeply for his family; very much like his father, Aki, actually.
It was his voice that Mirai hears as her front door opened.
"If you were a girl, I'd take you, but as it is... Anyway, you just have to wait two more years. It's not that long." He was saying calmly.
Rai's voice responded. "It still sucks. I want to go to the Yule Ball, too! And they say this year Rouge will be the guest performer too!! Ah, I wanna go!!!"
"Rai, you've been to their concert lots of time. You had already even performed with them."
Mirai smiled at them in mild wonder as they came in the living room.
Yuma automatically gave her a big grin as he saw her, while Rai had made a beeline for her and gave her a small squish.
"Hey, gran~" Rai greeted.
"Hey to you, too." Mirai said, laughing a little. Even though they see each other everyday, these two always greets her as if it's been so long since they saw her.
"Isn't it a little chilly here?" Yuma said as he too, went to his grandmother and gave her a kiss on the cheek as his greeting. "It's getting cold. Rai, can you adjust the heater?"
"Yeah, sure." Rai said before Mirai could say anything.
"It's okay." She said, anyway, but Rai had already gone to the heater. Mirai just shook her head in amusement.
"What were you two talking about, earlier?" She asked as Rai came back with the room feeling a little warmer, indeed.
"The Yule Ball." Rai said. "Niichan's going this year." He said with a pout.
Yuma just shrugged. "Well, I'm already in my senior year." He said.
He then turned to his grandmother. "What was it like during your Yule Ball, gran?" He asked her.
"I'm afraid I don't know what this Yule Ball is." Mirai said with a smile.
"Ehh?? Why not??" Rai asked in surprised.
Yuma looked surprised as well, but calmly explained. "It's an annual ball for the senior students. A sort of a Christmas party. I think every school has it. You didn't have one when you were in high school?"
"No." Mirai said. "And I don't think your parents did, either. They had their graduation ball but that's it. It must be a new thing." She told them.
"Well, what sort of events did you had when you were in high school, gran?" Asked Rai.
"Not much." Mirai said. "Just the field trips and the school festivals. We didn't even have the graduation ball, that started during your parents' time. It seems we're taking more and more from the western culture." She explained.
"Well that must have been… a little boring." Rai said.
"Rai." Yuma warned. Rai just smiled sheepishly.
"Well, we have Yule Ball and Graduation Ball now. Niichan's going to both this year. And I'll be going two years from now." Rai said hastily.
"I bet gramps would have taken you if you had one before, though." Yuma said with a small smile.
"Maybe." Mirai smiled a little nostalgically. "I told you how your grandfather's a little shy, didn't I? And we didn't get together until the end of our senior year, but yeah, maybe he would. That would have been fun."
"Aw, gran." Rai said getting up, and hugging his grandmother from the back. "I'm sure gramps misses you, too."
Mirai just laughed, feeling very happy indeed.
For the next few days though, Mirai was a little sad because she had barely seen her grandsons. According to Yuka, Rai had gone to a tour with his band, while Yuma was busy with his part time job. Yuma refused to asked his parents for money and opted to doing a part time job so he could save up to rent a limo and buy his tux for the Yule Ball. He must have been very excited, Mirai had mused. And he must be taking someone to the ball as his date, if he was going as far as renting a limo. Mirai felt a little melancholy at that. Her grandson is really growing up… as she was growing old. Sometimes, especially at times when she feels lonely, she wondered how long it is she has until she saw Ryosuke again. Having these thoughts in mind, she wonder if it would be sooner than later.
But then one day, after preparing some food and going to the living room (she does this everyday for her grandsons, and even after they stopped coming, just in case), she'd spotted a box on the sofa.
Feeling confused, she made her way to it. She opened it and gasped as she saw what was inside the box. It was an exquisite dress. There was a note and a single white rose on top of it.
She took the note and read it. As she does, she started tearing up.
“Grandma, you are the most beautiful person that I know, and every girl deserves to go to the Yule Ball. Be ready by 7. Love, Yuma.”
