The latest challenge on photochallenge was City/Town/Village Life. I didn't submit anything. I couldn't find anything I liked in the pictures I've taken that I felt was a strong contender, and I didn't want to go with the oh so prevalent "look, here is a street sign", or "here is my city's skyline". Tripod will definitely help. The rule of thumb is to always use some sort of support whenever the shutter speed is slower than one over the focal length of the lens. So, if you are shooting at 50mm, that's 1/45 shutter speed, 100mm -- 1/90. 1/90 is generally a good number to follow, so anything slower than that, either brace yourself against a wall, a tree, anything else, or use a tripod.

For this particular challenge I was looking for black&white. It evokes that "city" feeling to me, better than color. I don't know why people prefer black and white. It just works better for some things than color. But it's all a matter of preference.

I will definitely submit a photo for this challenge. I plan to go home and scan a few.
