Okay so I thought I might as well try playing by the Fire Emblem-ish rules with a Pokemon game. I've got a Leaf Green with shittons of progress on it but hadn't bothered with a Fire Red I got to try trading stuff some months ago (didn't work), so I thought I could just use that.
I figure I'll forget stuff if I don't keep a record of it, so I'll keep a log on here. I won't flood your friends page with updates, don't worry. Party status at each hour in-game time will appear in the post, I'll limit myself to one post every several days as a way to ensure I do other stuff with my time.
Rules from:
http://www.fybertech.com/4get/12698405851235.png- Doing the 'not a duplicate' option.
- No held items UNLESS the Pokemon was caught with it or picks it up itself
- Healing in Pokemon Centers and mid-battle only. This applies not just to items but abilities - Chansey's SOFTBOILED (HA, like I'll catch one) cannot be used outside battle.
Alright so I started the game and went through all the typical beginning of the adventure stuff. I chose Squirtle as my starter and named him Leo after the ninja turtle, despite the fact that Leo turned out to be a girl. We kicked Gary's Bulbasaur's ass (named my player HAWKEYE and rival ZANDEL) and went to pick up Oak's parcel. My hopes of managing to catch a Pokemon on route 1 were dashed when a single Pidgey popped up before we could make it to Viridian. Fucking Pidgey. Since the damage was done I took the long way back to Pallet so as to level up Leo. Got my first five Pokeballs, went back up north, got the Teachy TV from the crazy old man, continued on to Route 2, where I caught a lv. 4 Rattata. I named him Ripfang after a character in the Redwall book series. In Viridian Forest I caught a lv. 4 Weedle and named him Buzz. After that I began the trio's training montage. Training Buzz was a PAIN IN THE ASS, right before he evolved only two of his stats were in double digits: HP and Speed, which was 10. He evolved to Kakuna and I made the first status update
Hour 1 party status-
Leo, Squirtle, level 9, female, 'naive nature', ability: Torrent
Buzz, Kakuna, level 7, male, 'brave nature', ability: Shed Skin
Ripfang, Rattata, level 5, male, 'naughty nature', ability: Guts
I decided being overprepared was better than being underprepared, and made sure everyone was at least level 7 before heading into Vidirian Forest. One Bug Catcher nearly ruined everything with his fucking Weedles and poisoned both Leo AND Ripfang. Fortunately Leo managed to defeat the last Weedle and I let Buzz slowly but surely Poison Sting to death the guy's last bug, a Kakuna, and used both my Potions on Ripfang and Leo to make sure they had enough health to make it to the center. Close call. I bought some Potions and Antidotes from the Viridian mart. With renewed paranoia I went back to grinding against wild Pokemon.
Hour 2 party status-
Leo, Squirtle, level 10
Buzz, Kakuna, level 8
Ripfang, Rattata, level 9
Annoyed with Buzz being useless as hell I went outside Viridian Forest and resolved to Poison Sting rats and pigeons to death until he evolved to Beedrill. This increased my frustration before decreasing it, since it took forty goddamn minutes to improve two levels. I listened to
http://www.viddler.com/explore/Maxwell_Adams/videos/448/ to improve my mood, which worked long enough for Buzz to evolve. I dove back into Viridian Forest and made my way through to Pewter in the remaining fifteen or so minutes, mugging only one Bug Catcher on the way.
Hour 3 party status
Leo, Squirtle, level 12
Buzz, Beedrill, level 10, ability: Swarm
Ripfang, Rattata, level 9
I was fairly sure Leo could at this point rampage through Brock's gym, but just to be safe I leveled up Ripfang a bit more in the forest. After that I mopped up the last of the Bug Catchers and by the time I went back to Pewter, Leo was level 14 and knew Water Gun. Knowing this'd be enough I went to Brock's gym and wrecked everything. Leo evolved to Wartortle just after beating Brock by herself. From this point I went east on route 3, beat some trainers along the way, and when I stepped into the patch of grass at the end the first pokemon I encountered was a lv. 7 Mankey. One tackle from Ripfang and a pokeball later, and the fourth pokemon in my party was caught. I named him DK.
Hour 4 party status
Leo, Wartortle, level 17
Buzz, Beedrill, level 10
Ripfang, Rattata, level 12
DK, Mankey, level 7, male, 'hardy nature', ability: Vital Spirit
As soon as I went into Mt. Moon I encountered a lv.9 Zubat. DK Scratched her and I caught her. Named her Buffy. After that I decided to grind at the cave entrance since I wouldn't be catching anything for a while and I wanted to make sure I could get through okay. Lots of battling went on.
Hour 5 party status
Leo, Wartortle, level 18
Buzz, Beedrill, level 10
Ripfang, Rattata, level 13
DK, Mankey, level 11
Buffy, Zubat, level 11, female, 'lonely nature', ability: Inner Focus
Training montage continued, I wanted to make sure Buzz and Buffy could catch up with everyone.
Hour 6 party status
Leo, Wartortle, level 18
Buzz, Beedrill, level 14
Ripfang, Rattata, level 13
DK, Mankey, level 11
Buffy, Zubat, level 11
Hour 7 party status
Leo, Wartortle, level 20
Buzz, Beedrill, level 15
Ripfang, Rattata, level 15
DK, Mankey, level 13
Buffy, Zubat, level 13
Leo is a freaking monster, she just destroys everything in sight now. Buffy hasn't learned any powerful moves yet, but DK, Ripfang, and Buzz seem like they can hold their own at least against opponents of the same level without type advantages.
I started making my way through Mt. Moon proper, so next time we'll probably make it out of the cave. I'm stopping for now, though.
