Summary: Hyunjoong tends to relate to a lot of the music he listens to. He can’t help but think that one of his dongsaeng groups happens to have put his feelings into words with their new song better than just about anyone else. Even himself.
Hyunjoong put the song on repeat as he started his workout. Originally he’d started listening to the group because he’d been impressed with their dancing. He always made sure to catch at least one of their performances, but this particular song had stuck with him. The lyrics were hitting home in a way that most songs didn’t. These words were so close to what he’d been wanting to say to a certain groupmate for years and years now.
He bobbed his head along with the beat as he climbed on the treadmill to warm up. He supposed that it was his own fault. Youngsaeng wasn’t exactly the most observant when it came to people who liked him. More than once Hyungjoon and Jungmin had fallen over laughing because Youngsaeng was so oblivious to someone flirting with him. The fact that Hyunjoong’s much more subtle attentions were unnoticed shouldn’t have surprised him, but after all the time they’d spent together he’d hoped that Youngsaeng would pick up on it sooner rather than later.
His workout would take him two hours to complete if he did everything he planned on doing and did it all properly. About an hour into his workout he was working with free weights and nearly dropped one of them on his foot when Youngsaeng appeared rather suddenly in front of him. He took a deep breath and set the weights down. Before he could tug his earbuds out, Youngsaeng took one and put it to his ear.
Youngsaeng hummed along for a minute before he seemed to recognize the song. “I didn’t know you like Infinite.”
Hyunjoong pulled his iPod out of his pocket and paused the music only to have Youngsaeng snag it. Youngsaeng tilted his head to the side and looked at Hyunjoong with a raised eyebrow.
“You must really like this song to have it on repeat,” Youngsaeng said.
“It’s a good song,” Hyunjoong said.
“Yeah, but usually you have a whole playlist, not just a song to work out to,” Youngsaeng replied. He wrapped the headphone cords around the iPod and set it aside.
Hyunjoong decided that this was an excellent time to change the topic. “What brings you to the gym? Hoping to admire me working out?”
Youngsaeng laughed. “Not quite. I was hoping we could get something to eat. I’m bored and you can entertain me.”
“So I’m cheap entertainment for you?” Hyunjoong asked. “That’s not very nice.”
“If you’d rather, I could go bug Kyujong. That won’t be as much fun, though, since he’s bugging Hyungjoon,” Youngsaeng said.
Hyunjoong wrinkled his nose. “I don’t think you should bug those two. You might end up scarred for life.”
Youngsaeng laughed. “So, are you going to entertain me?”
“Why don’t you work out with me? You’re too skinny,” Hyunjoong said. “You’re always too skinny.”
“I am not!” Youngsaeng protested.
“You’re like the size of a pencil,” Hyunjoong said.
Youngsaeng smacked Hyunjoong’s arm. “Go shower so we can get something to eat if you think I’m too tiny.”
“Only if you promise to actually eat. I don’t think you do that anymore,” Hyunjoong retorted. He grabbed his bag and went to pick up his iPod when Youngsaeng picked it up. “Saeng...”
“I want to listen to this song you’re obsessed with,” Youngsaeng said.
“It applies to you, that’s why,” Hyunjoong said. He left quickly, not sure why he’d actually just said that aloud. That really was supposed to be left unsaid, after all. Granted, knowing Youngsaeng like he did, Youngsaeng probably wouldn’t figure out what that meant. Why did he have to be so damn oblivious? Hyunjoong wasn’t even that oblivious. He thought, anyway.
Youngsaeng put the headphones in and restarted the song, tapping his fingers along to the beat. It was a good song and he’d enjoyed the couple performances he’d caught while watching the shows for Kyujong and Hyunjoong. He wasn’t sure he liked the message, though. If someone felt like that towards him, he would want them to say something, not just watch over him. That just seemed silly to him. Hyunjoong seemed to think this applied to Youngsaeng somehow, but Youngsaeng couldn’t even begin to figure that out.
As song was ending its third play, Hyunjoong came back and smiled at him. Youngsaeng smiled and turned off the iPod before taking the earbuds out. “You’re weird,” he said.
“Why am I weird for taking a shower?” Hyunjoong asked. “I mean, I know I’m weird, but I thought taking a shower was pretty normal.”
Youngsaeng smiled. “Let’s get something to eat. I’m hungry and bored.”
Hyunjoong stared at him. “I thought I was supposed to be the weird one.” He took his iPod back and stuck it in his bag as they walked out of the gym. “You owe me gym time.”
“Why does that song apply to me?” Youngsaeng asked.
“You’re smart enough to figure it out,” Hyunjoong said. He pulled out his keys and pointed Youngsaeng in the right direction. “Where are we going to eat?”
“Anywhere,” Youngsaeng said. He wasn’t really in the mood for anything specific. He was simply hungry and wanted to spend time with Hyunjoong.
“That... doesn’t help,” Hyunjoong said. “Didn’t you have something in mind when you came to interrupt my workout?”
“I wanted to be entertained,” Youngsaeng said. “Entertain me.”
Hyungjoon stopped and seemed to lose himself in thought. Youngsaeng waited for him to make a move, but gave up on anything happening.
“What?” Youngsaeng asked.
“Nothing,” Hyunjoong said.
Youngsaeng pouted. “What? You’re thinking something. You’re not that vapid.”
“I’m not vapid at all!” Hyunjoong said.
“Well maybe not vapid, but vacant. Have you watched some of our interviews? You’re in la la land half the time,” Youngsaeng said. “You can be vacant, but you’re usually thinking of something and I want to know.”
“It was nothing. I was trying to decide where to eat,” Hyunjoong said. He walked over to the car and opened the passenger door for Youngsaeng before tossing his bag in the back seat.
“You’re lying,” Youngsaeng said.
“Deal with it,” Hyunjoong retorted. He climbed in and started the car.
Youngsaeng glared at Hyunjoong, but quickly got over the annoyance at being lied to. Eventually Hyunjoong would tell him. Eventually, Hyunjoong told him everything. Despite the awkwardness they sometimes had, there was little they didn’t know about each other. The fact that there appeared to be something about Hyunjoong he didn’t know was vaguely annoying, but nothing to bug him about constantly.
“So, did you decide where we’re going for food?” Youngsaeng asked.
“You really don’t know what you want to eat?” Hyunjoong asked.
“No. I just wanted to hang out. We don’t get to do that often anymore,” Youngsaeng said. He stretched and leaned against the window, eyeing Hyunjoong suspiciously. “Why do you think that song applies to me?”
“I told you that you’re smart enough to figure it out on your own, “Hyunjoong said.
“Just tell me,” Youngsaeng said.
“No,” Hyunjoong said. “Do you want Korean or Japanese food?”
“Japanese,” Youngsaeng said. He glared at Hyunjoong, frustrated that he wasn’t getting what he wanted. Well, he was getting what he wanted. He was hanging out with Hyunjoong and that was important, but now he was bothered by the idea that a song applied to him without knowing how.
“Stop it. I’m not going to tell you,” Hyunjoong said.
“Can’t you at least give me a hint?” Youngsaeng asked.
“I told you it’s about you. What more do you need to know?” Hyunjoong asked. “Sushi or a more extensive menu?”
Youngsaeng blinked. “More extensive. I’m not in the mood for sushi.” He pouted. “Stop trying to change the subject and just explain what you meant. It’s weird that you’re being so secretive about it.”
“You always say I’m weird,” Hyunjoong said.
“That’s because you are, but I want you to stop being weird now,” Youngsaeng said.
Hyunjoong looked at him out of the corner of his eye and shook his head. “Nope. I like being weird.”
Youngsaeng whined and folded his arms across his chest. This wasn’t how this was supposed to go at all. Why did Hyunjoong have to bring up that song at all, anyway?
“Did you learn that from Hyungjoon?” Hyunjoong asked.
“Watch it or I’ll hit you,” Youngsaeng retorted.
Hyunjoong laughed and turned down a street Youngsaeng was pretty sure went in the opposite direction of their favorite Japanese place.
“Where are we going? Someplace new?” Youngsaeng asked. He looked around, trying to figure out where they might be going.
“I figured we could get take out from a place near my apartment and eat there. Less chance of being disturbed,” Hyunjoong said. “Sound good to you?”
Youngsaeng nodded and settled back in his seat. He started humming the song that Hyunjoong was being annoying about since it was now stuck in his head. How could this song be about him? There wasn’t anyone he was watching over like that in his life.
Hyunjoong went to get drinks and plates while Youngsaeng took their food out of bags and opened the containers. He dug around until he found two bottles of beer and went back to the seldom used table. Youngsaeng was still humming the Infinite song as he finished arranging everything and Hyunjoong had to smile. He really was oblivious.
“All set?” Hyunjoong asked as he set the plates on the table.
Youngsaeng looked up with a smile. “I would be if you’d tell me why you think that song applies to me,” he said.
Hyunjoong shook his head and held out one of the beers. “Eventually you’ll figure it out for yourself.”
As they opened their beers they sat down at the table. “Do you even use this thing?” Youngsaeng asked.
“Not really,” Hyunjoong said. “I usually eat somewhere else. Dance studio, recording studio, restaurant, car. I’m not here enough to eat.”
“I do the same thing,” Youngsaeng said.
They piled food from each of the containers onto their plates and fell silent as they ate. The others would say they were being awkward again, but Hyunjoong thought it was fairly comfortable to just sit and eat with Youngsaeng like this even if he often just wanted to push Youngsaeng down and kiss him. And thoughts like that weren’t really going to get anywhere when Youngsaeng couldn’t even figure out that he was the one the song was being sung to, not the one singing.
They were almost done with the food when Youngsaeng looked up at Hyunjoong again. “Why do you think that song applies to me?”
Hyunjoong stared at him in disbelief. “You still haven’t figured it out?” he asked.
“No,” Youngsaeng whined. “You should just tell me since I know there’s no one I’m protecting.”
“You’re not in the position of the person singing,” Hyunjoong said. Maybe, just maybe, Youngsaeng would figure it out, but he still looked incredibly confused by the statement.
“There’s no one that thinks of me like that,” Youngsaeng said, sounding confident. Then he hesitated. “Right?”
Hyunjoong felt like banging his head against the wall. “Be mine. I love you, okay? I worry about you, okay? I’ll take care of you until the end,” he sang softly.
Youngsaeng stared at him for what felt like an eternity. “Oh,” he said softly.
“Do you get it now?” Hyunjoong asked.
“Yeah… but why didn’t you say something sooner?” Youngsaeng asked.
All there was left to do with his frustration was to do what he’d been dreaming of doing since SS501 was formed. He walked around the table, pulled Youngsaeng to his feet and kissed him firmly on the lips.
When they parted Youngsaeng smiled. “I still think you should have said something sooner.”
Hyunjoong didn’t even bother resisting the urge to smack Youngsaeng lightly upside the head. “Listen to the song again,” he said. He promptly pulled Youngsaeng in for another kiss even as he decided to make Youngsaeng listen closely to the song later. Much later. After they’d caught up for all the lost time Youngsaeng had spent oblivious to Hyunjoong’s feelings.
