Notes: Merry Christmas!
Summary: HyungJoon is a newly-made demon with the worst luck of anyone above or below the earth. This doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon, especially with an angel getting in his way.
Okay, there he is. You’re not going to get away from me this time!
It was a simple enough mission. His boss was pissed that some person named ShinWoo had cheated death and, to make a long story short, wanted him dragged to the gates of Hell kicking and screaming. So here HyungJoon was, peeking around a building corner to watch the young man who was about to cross the street.
ShinWoo was a rising star in the mafia world, sure to fall to Hell when he died. The problem was, he hadn’t died when he was supposed to. HyungJoon’s boss ranted something about angels trying to keep him alive and redeem him so he wouldn’t fall to Hell, then kicked his new demon underling through the gate back to the human world. He wasn’t to come back unless he was dragging ShinWoo behind him, were HeeChul’s exact words as he examined his nails and with a snap of his fingers sent HyungJoon crashing onto a street in downtown Seoul.
Rubbing his sore head from the rough landing, and checking to make sure he hadn’t broken a horn, HyungJoon gave a long-suffering sigh and went back to waiting for his chance.
None of this wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t met an untimely end - excavated by a bike stand while running from angry mafia people. Not exactly a glorious death, but then again, he’d only been a gang messenger. And since he hadn’t had many spectacularly good moments in his life to level off the playing field, off to Hell he went; straight into HeeChul’s manicured hands.
That man was going to be insufferable for the rest of his afterlife, HyungJoon could tell. The only thing he had to look forward to was that after the first 400 years, he’d have enough seniority to be able to lay back and laze around until there was something more serious than a guy cheating death to deal with.
…Who was he kidding, he’d still be bullied around. It was Hell after all. But he wasn’t worrying about that now, or he’d miss his chance to finally get that ShinWoo guy to just die already.
He’d cross the street without waiting for the walker’s light; that was obvious. All HyungJoon had to do was make him trip up and stay on the ground long enough for that car that was barreling through the street to run him over.
Seeing ShinWoo start to cross, the demon lifted his hand, ready to snap his fingers and make it happen.
“Who are you stalking this time, little demon?”
A sudden foot planted in his back to get his attention send HyungJoon onto his face with a yelp of surprise. Rubbing his sore nose, HyungJoon twisted his head around to see a bored-looking man standing behind him, hands behind his head and giving a lazy smirk.
“Why do you always have to kick me to get my attention?” HyungJoon whined, forgetting for a moment he was an all-powerful demon who could strike this idiotic human straight through the gates of Hell.
“Your fault for crouching on the ground.”
“No one else can see me, I thought it was fine,” HyungJoon huffed, arms folded over his chest. His very first mission as a demon had been to warp this man’s mind with darkness and force him away from his current path to Heaven. That idea had totally backfired when it turned out HyunJoong could actually see demons, and proceeded to laugh HyungJoon out of the room when the demon tried to sneak up to him.
Reminded of his current mission, HyungJoon looked back at the street corner quickly. ShinWoo was nowhere to be found. “God dammit.”
“Ironic coming from a demon,” HyunJoong snorted, leaning up against the wall beside him.
“Don’t you have something better to do than taunt a demon?”
“Not really.”
Figures, he dies and he’s still being tormented. As if HeeChul wasn’t enough. HyungJoon stood up, bat wings rustling behind him as he dusted off his clothes. “You made me lose my target.”
“Glad to be of service,” HyunJoong replied cheekily. HyungJoon scowled at him.
“I could kill you, you know.”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah really!”
“Then try.”
“I will!” And HyungJoon scrunched up his face and shouted as loud as he could in his head for the annoying man in front of him to just drop dead.
A long minute passed.
“…Your face is going to get stuck that way.”
HyungJoon cracked one eye open. Not dead.
“Oh shut up.”

“A human who’s protected by the angels can’t be touched by the likes of us,” YoungSaeng tried to explain for the millionth time to the sulking HyungJoon. HyunJoong had proceeded to laugh at the demon until HyungJoon ran away from embarrassment. “Not directly anyways. You have to draw them away from the angels first.”
“I already tried that,” HyungJoon pouted, drawing circles in the dirt. “HeeChul is going to kill me if I don’t go back with at least someone.”
“You were talking about that HyunJoong guy, right?” JungMin piped up, swinging his legs back and forth from his perch on the balcony overhead. “Forget it, no one can turn him.”
“But HeeChul told me it would be easy!” HyungJoon whined loudly.
“HeeChul wanted an excuse to yell at someone,” JungMin snorted.
“Go back to trying to get that ShinWoo person, that’s your best bet,” YoungSaeng patted HyungJoon’s shoulder sympathetically. “If a year passes without result, try to sneak back through the gate, maybe he’ll have forgotten all about it.”
A year. HyungJoon’s shoulders slumped. “He’s gonna kill me a second time.” Then he suddenly perked up. “Have you ever seen an angel, hyung?”
“An angel?” The succubus tilted his head to the side. “Yeah, of course.”
“I haven’t yet,” HyungJoon pouted, then yelped when JungMin’s head dropped down in between them, the demon hanging upside down on the balcony railing.
“Be happy about that, they’re snotty and self-righteous and annoying pains,” JungMin huffed.
“You just described yourself in a nutshell.” YoungSaeng pulled on a fistful of red hair and JungMin fell from the balcony with a yelp and a thud. “Besides, communication with an angel is against the rules. HeeChul would have our heads if we actually spoke to one of them for more than threatening purposes.”
“Another thing to add to the list of things we can’t do?” HyungJoon huffed.
“Get used to it,” YoungSaeng chuckled, and shrieked when JungMin dragged him down to the ground with him. “YAH!”
HyungJoon shook his head at them both and decided to take off before they started making out in front of him like last time.

There he was, ShinWoo was as slippery as a snake. HyungJoon watched from a rooftop as the young human hung out with some people who had to be part of his street gang on the corner, whistling at young ladies who walked by. It didn’t look like they were going to be moving.
How could he kill him like this? Looking around, HyungJoon’s eyes landed on a few construction materials in the middle of the roof. If he could knock those over the edge, on top of ShinWoo, that would be perfect. Score one for Hell, zero for Heaven.
Plus, being on the roof meant HyunJoong couldn’t find him and mess him up again. That guy was far too nosey for a human, weren’t humans supposed to be scared of demons?
Dragging a large block of wood to the edge of the roof, HyungJoon carefully perched himself on the edge and aimed. He was right on top of them, a drop straight down onto ShinWoo’s head would do the job nicely. Picking up the slab of wood, HyungJoon made sure his aim was perfect before dropping it.
Watching the wood fall in anticipation, a choked squeak of surprise escaped the demon when the wood spun out of the way, like a piece of paper blown by the wind, to crash to the ground beside the group and leave them unharmed.
Staring in shock, HyungJoon whined and stomped his feet like a two-year-old. Seriously! Why couldn’t he just kill the guy already?! Huffing as he recovered from the mini-tantrum, the demon looked up, and froze when he met someone’s eyes from across the street.
The other man was perched on the rooftop directly across from him, dressed entirely in white with frosted white hair and pale skin. He watched HyungJoon with an amused smile, legs swinging back and forth idly.
Angel HyungJoon’s mind squeaked when he saw the brilliant feathery wings behind the man, putting his own miniature bat wings to shame. The demon practically melted at how gorgeous the angel was, all kind smile and soft chocolate eyes and long, long legs.
“…Uh.” Was all that came out of his mouth.
The angel’s eyes danced before he waved cheerfully and pushed himself off the edge of the roof.
“Hey!“ HyungJoon leaned over the edge of the roof, but the angel was gone. Staring for a long moment, HyungJoon whined again and slumped back onto his knees, hitting his head repeatedly against the concrete roof ledge.
So, he’d messed up again, and now ShinWoo was gone, he and his friends leaving after the wood fell beside them. Not only that, but he’d been thwarted by an angel, his sworn enemy.
His really, really hot sworn enemy.
That last thought made him hit his head harder. Bad, bad! No thinking of angels that way! ….I’m in so much trouble.
*******************************
He was in so much trouble.
“What do you mean you still haven’t killed him?!” HeeChul’s shriek sent HyungJoon darting under a street bench for cover. His boss seized him by his pointed tail and dragged him right back out. For a guy who would make a stick envious, he was strong.
“I’m sorry, I’m trying!” HyungJoon covered his head and whined. “It’s just been bad luck! Or good luck for him. Or…I’m sorry please don’t kill me!”
“You’re already dead you twit,” HeeChul scowled down at him.
“I know, I know! I’m sorry, I nearly had him, but the angel-“
“Angel? An angel interfered?”
Hoping the loosening grip on his tail meant he was out of hot water, HyungJoon peeked up at his boss. Uh oh. HeeChul had that thunder face on. “Uh. Yeah. I was trying to drop a block of wood on the guy’s head and the angel blew it away.”
“Those bird-brained idiots, that man belongs to me,” HeeChul’s eyes flashed. “Humph, I don’t have the time to deal with them now. You don’t stop until you have ShinWoo’s head on a platter, got it imp?”
“Y-yes sir!” HyungJoon yelped when his tail was yanked again. That hurt!
HeeChul was gone. Sitting up, HyungJoon nursed his sore tail and sulked. Yeah, he was dead. A second time.
That angel had been really cute though….
“Stop it!” HyungJoon hit his head against the wooden bench. “…Ow.”
***********************************
A week later and eight death attempts later, HyungJoon was debating the possibility of finding someone who looked like ShinWoo and killing him instead.
Everytime he thought he had the elusive crook, that angel got in his way. A soft gust of wind, a small stumble, and ShinWoo was out of harms way once again. It was enough to make HyungJoon want to pull his horns out. He just wanted to get this mission over with before HeeChul lost his temper and dropped him into a fire pit or something equally painful.
He couldn’t even ask YoungSaeng and JungMin to help; the redhead at least would have been all too happy to thwart an angel, but he was on his own mission in Japan right then, and YoungSaeng had tagged along to make sure the reckless younger demon didn’t get himself beheaded. All he had for company was HyunJoong, and the human was unsympathetic to his plight.
“You don’t get it! If I don’t come up with a dead body by the end of the month, HeeChul’s going to fry me!” HyungJoon whined behind the human as HyunJoong waited for the streetlight to change. He wasn’t even sure if the man could hear him past his headphones.
“Then why are you whining to me and not trying to kill him?” HyunJoong raised an eyebrow, glancing over his shoulder.
“I’ve been trying all day,” HyungJoon sulked. “That angel wouldn’t leave him alone for a minute.”
“Angel, huh?”
“Yeah…a tall guy with white from head to toe. He’s kinda cute…not that I’ve been looking or anything, it’s just I suppose most angels are supposed to look cute, right?” HyungJoon hurried to redeem himself after that slip. HyunJoong just snorted and rolled his eyes, starting to walk again when the pedestrian light turned green.
“Completely white, you say? Like, frosted hair and everything?”
“Yeah.”
“Brown eyes?”
“Yea- wait, how do you know?”
“Cause he’s just over there,” HyunJoong nodded towards his left and kept on walking when HyungJoon stopped in confusion. “Later.”
Looking around, the demon saw the angel just down the street, sitting on a park bench and apparently basking in the sunlight. HyungJoon pursed his lips, arguing with himself mentally.
That was it. He was going to go tell that guy to back off from ShinWoo. He was a demon, he could be intimidating! He’d scare the angel so much he left ShinWoo and then HyungJoon could kill him and bring him to HeeChul and be out of hot water for a couple days before HeeChul found him some other impossible task to complete.
Mind made up, HyungJoon stomped his way over, gathering himself to be as intimidating as he could be. He’d seen JungMin when pissed before, it wasn’t a pretty sight. Remembering that, HyungJoon gathered darkness around his form to combat the strong sunlight, sparks of fire appearing with each step he took as he made his eyes glow an eerie red.
Opening his mouth to yell, everything stopped when the angel turned his head to look at him inquisitively with wide, doe-like eyes, and with a *pop* HyungJoon was back to normal, looking more like a stunned deer than an all-powerful demon.
“Hello,” the angel smiled at him, and it was the first time he’d heard the man speak, voice marked by an adorable country lint. HyungJoon was left gaping like a fish out of water.
“…Uh.” Then he snapped out of it. No, no, he was here with a mission! Not to gawk at the enemy! “Hey! You better back off and leave my target alone, or else I’ll…I’ll…” HyungJoon quickly realized it was hard to be intimidating with the angel blinking at him curiously. “…I’ll do something evil!” he finished lamely. “Because I’m a demon, I’m evil! Don’t get in my way!”
“You don’t seem very evil.”
“Yeah, I-…wait, what?” HyungJoon balked. “I’m a demon, of course I’m evil! See these? And these?” He pointed out his horns, bat wings and spiked tail, all of which screamed evil to him.
“I think they’re cute,” the angel replied matter-of-factly, still smiling at him.
HyungJoon felt his face heating up and flailed a little, trying to think of a way to redeem himself as a dangerous demon. Turning away for a moment to think, he yelled at himself mentally. What was he doing, he could just smite the guy with fire or something, right? Angels and demons got into fights all the time, he could blast the damn angel into outer space with a solid hit!
Mind made up, HyungJoon whirled around to face the angel again, and nearly shrieked when he found the other man inches from his face, leaned over to look at him curiously. Instantly all plans to stomp the angel into the ground evaporated from HyungJoon’s mind like water in the desert.
“Do demons have to be evil?” The angel inquired.
“…Uh.” HyungJoon had lost the ability to talk again, just staring into the angel’s eyes.
“I don’t think so…they just have to be caught on the wrong side at the wrong time. Are you really evil, HyungJoon?”
How did you know my name? was what HyungJoon thought in alarm. “…Uh?” was what left his mouth.
The angel smiled at him and leaned in to kiss him softly while HyungJoon stood there frozen. Out of all the things he could have been thinking, including the fact that a demon shouldn’t be kissing an angel or vica versa, the only coherent thought he had was he’s cute AND a good kisser!
*******************************
HyunJoong looked up over the edge of his manhwa and raised an eyebrow. “…What are you doing?”
“Killing myself,” HyungJoon said glumly, perched on the open window. “Before HeeChul does.”
HyunJoong watched the demon push himself off. “Shouldn’t you have told him he’s already dead, and that this is the 15th floor so that’s really going to hurt?” KyuJong asked worriedly from where he’d just appeared behind the human’s chair, feathers rustling in concern for his boyfriend.
There was a loud bang and an “OW!” from outside the window. “The garbage bin broke his fall,” HyunJoong shrugged, going back to his manhwa as if nothing was wrong.
