While perseverance can be a benefit, aren't you glad you didn't spend years in a job you hated that drove the passion out of your bones? That is what happened to me - I persevered in something I hated and the recovery is going to take awhile.

In my opinion, working for money should ONLY be about supporting your personal goals. Work is not an end in itself unless you have a very worthwhile job. If you are passionate about writing, your job allows you to make enough money to pay the bills and have your evenings to write. If your passion is painting, your day job allows you to buy brushes, paints, canvas. So many people, especially where I came from in Northern Virginia, seem to be defined by their careers when they should be working to pay for life.

Let there be more people who follow their dreams and not the career ladder!
