i was supposed to be still innocent at the age of thirteen...

Dressed in a cute white and orange kitty costume his Mom made for him, Yukwon stood up in front of the camera, wide smile spread across his innocent face. With sounds accompanying his movements, he practiced doing his cute poses, even winking and throwing the camera some flying kisses.

“Where’s Inhwan?” his father asked, looking at Yukwon through the lense and adjusting the angle.

Yukwon’s smile disappeared as he looked around, eyebrows a little crinkled. “Maybe she’s still getting changed? She hates her costume, but she doesn’t want to trade hers with mine.” He shrugged as he looked down at his hands which were covered in a thick orange cloth with patches of light pink, one big and four others small, with foams inside to make it a little bloated, making it look like real cat paws.

Today was Yukwon’s thirteenth birthday and his parents wanted to give him a present that would always make him remember the day he turned into a teenager. And yes, that present is an animal costume. Since it was his Mom who was going to make the costumes and since he loves animals, Yukwon didn’t have the heart to say no. Even though wearing an animal costume at the day you turn into a teenager is a bit hilarious, he couldn’t say no.

So, he asked his Mom if she could make two of them. One for him and one for his lovable best friend, Inhwan. Afterall, that’s what friends are for, right? Join you especially in the most hilarious day of your life...

“Really? Celebrate your birthday - with me - by wearing animal costumes?? Ugh, Yukwon, you know I don’t like animals!”

Yukwon wanted to laugh at how Inhwan looked like, eyebrows knitted together in annoyance. He was also preparing himself if ever Inhwan started throwing things at him.

“Well, we’re best friends!” Yukwon laughed...

At his reason or at her face, Inhwan didn’t know. “Fuck you!” She cursed.

“Hey! You just said a bad word! Auntie!!!”

Inhwan threw her right shoe at Yukwon, hitting him on his left chest. “Yah! Don’t you know boys could also get breast cancer?!”

“Inhwan is here~” came Yukwon’s mom’s voice.

Yukwon’s smile appeared once again upon seeing Inhwan (she was somehow being dragged because she was so embarrassed). She was wearing a costume similar to Yukwon, the difference being the colors. Inhwan’s black and white while Yukwon was orange and white.

Inhwan stood unwillingly next to Yukwon, who had an arm already draped over Inhwan’s shoulder.

“Okay, both of you,” they heard Yukwon’s father call.

“Don’t be such a grumpy cat, Hwannie,” Yukwon said, all teeth visible and jaw clenched to a smile.

“I hate cats,” Inhwan murmured.

“But you love me,” Yukwon chuckled.

“Three, two, one, say cheese!”

“Meow~” said Yukwon.

“That was the worst birthday ever,” Inhwan said to Yukwon as the two of them walked along the hallway. “Remembering it makes me wanna throw up.”

“No, it’s not,” Yukwon purred. “Your birthday’s in two months. Instead of blabbering about how my birthday sucks, you should be thinking of an animal costume so that Mom can prepare it already,” he said to her.

“No way!” Inhwan almost screamed at Yukwon, the horror of wearing an animal costume on her birthday stirring all the food she ate this morning, making her want to throw up.

They stood by the door of Inhwan’s classroom. Yukwon smiled at her widely and then ruffled her bangs. “See ‘ya later, kiddo.”

“We’re both kids,” Inhwan stated with a straight face. “But stop messing my hair or I’m going to kick your balls.”

“And you call that innocent?” Yukwon snickered. “I’m not a kid anymore,” he claimed, holding tightly on the straps of his backpack. “I’m a teenager.”

“Whatever. You still look like a kid for me,” Inhwan rolled her eyes once more before turning her back to Yukwon. “Get lost.”

“Bye, kid.”

“Bye,” Inhwan said lazily.

With a sigh, Inhwan sat heavily on her chair, dropping her backpack on the floor and then propping her elbows on the table, her chin on her right palm. Everything went by in a blur. Yukwon’s birthday. Summer vacation. Her Mom’s birthday. Classes. With just a blink of an eye, everything passed by quickly, and in a few more months, it’s her birthday that’s coming. She’s going to be a teenager too, like Yukwon, so said boy could no longer have a reason to call her kiddo. She hates it. She hated it the moment Yukwon started calling her ‘kiddo’.

“Just ‘cause he’s a year older and is already a teenager,” Inhwan rolled her eyes for the third time today.

And then she started wondering what she would do on her birthday. She thought should enjoy her last two months of being a twelve year old girl instead of moping about how soon her birthday’s coming.

But how? She wasn’t sure, but it’s certainly not going to be how Yukwon celebrated his because she doesn't’ like cats. She hates cats. She despises them. But not Yukwon.

Kdgfdxcjhisdgh not Yukwon, she thought. “Psh, always giving me a roller coaster of feelings,” she groaned.

-

“It’s not my birthday yet,” Inhwan said monotonously as she stared down at Minhyuk who held a stem of yellow Tulip in his hands.

His head was hanging low and he was obviously trembling as he stood before Inhwan.

“It-it’s not f-for your b-birthday, I-I-Inhwan,” Minhyuk stuttered.

Inhwan crinkled her eyebrows.

A few feet behind Minhyuk stood Yukwon, his face unreadable as he held tightly on the straps of his backpack. And then he swallowed. ‘Why the hell is Minhyuk hyung giving Inhwan a flower?? Did he confess? Holy shit.’

“I-its b-bec-cause I-I...”

“Stop stuttering,” Inhwan sighed in annoyance. “And you’re gonna break the flower’s stem, idiot.”

Minhyuk shut his eyes tightly and clenched his teeth. 'She called me an idiot...' he cried mentally.

“Give me that, weirdo,” Inhwan said as she took (more like snatched) the flower from the trembling boy. “Thanks for the flower. I’m gonna do my best to make this last until my birthday, which is still in a month,” she said as she walked towards Yukwon.

Minhyuk fell on his knees, thinking, 'I didn’t know she was this cute in such a close distance... I can’t...'

“Did he tell you he likes you?” Yukwon asked as they walked down the hallway to the canteen.

“Nope,” Inhwan said, looking straight ahead with the flower in her right hand. “The boy didn’t even say something except, “It wasn’t for your birthday... I... holy shit, he keeps stuttering!” he said, frustrated.

“It’s kinda awkward,” Yukwon said after a few seconds.

“What’s awkward? You mean, he’s awkward,” Inhwan said, rolling her eyes.

They finally reached the canteen.

“No, he’s not. You’re just scary,” Yukwon chuckled, flicking the back of Inhwan’s head.

Inhwan wasn’t in the mood to Wushu him.

“Because Minhyuk is three years older than you and two years older than me... and he likes you. A boy three years older than you... uhh likes you... confessed to you... I mean... he’s scared because... even though you’re younger...” Yukwon didn’t know what to say and his mind wasn’t helping at processing the right sentences either.

“I short, he’s a pedo,” Inhwan said as she sat on a chair. “Now go get us something before I eat this flower.”

“You’re a monster,” Yukwon said, dropping his bag on the table and messing Inhwan’s hair before running away to buy them food.

“Idiot,” Inhwan said, staring at the flower.

I don’t like Minhyuk because he’s not you, she thought.

-

“Inhwan, Yukwon’s here. Are you not done preparing yet?” she heard her Mom call downstairs.

“Ugh, why does he have to be so early today??” Inhwan groaned as she went out of her room, hurriedly wearing her school shoes, backpack on her back, hair disarrayed and tie undone. In between her lips was her comb.

After a few seconds of wearing her shoes, she then proceeded to combing her hair while running down the stairs. “I’m going!” She shouted as she ran towards the door, opening it quickly and then closing it with a slam.

Inhwan’s Mom shook her head with a sigh, “This girl’s never going to change...”

“And she’s going to be thirteen in five days,” her Father added.

Her Mom shrugged. “You two are just the same,” she stated.

“You look horrible,” said Yukwon as they walk down the road.

“It’s your fault. Why do you have to be so early?” she questioned, still combing her hair. “It takes me five minutes to comb my hair, you know?”

“Why so long when you can just do it in a few seconds? You never tie your hair anyway,” Yukwon said back.

“Whatever, Kim Yukwon. You’re not a girl like me,” Inhwan rolled her eyes. With a sigh, she pulled out her phone and looked at herself through the screen. Satisfied, she pushed back her phone in her pocket and then walked ahead of Yukwon, giving him her comb. “Put it in my bag,” she ordered him as she walked in front.

With an eyeroll, Yukwon grumpily took the comb from Inhwan and then zipped her bag open. He threw the comb inside carelessly and then zipped the bag close.

Inhwan walked next to Yukwon again.

“Uhm, I want to give you something,” Yukwon said as he stopped on his steps.

Inhwan stopped, looking at Yukwon who was now digging something in his bag. “It’s not my birthday yet,” she said.

“I know,” Yukwon mumbled and then smiled. He turned to Inhwan and gave her a box the size of a notebook. “Here, my first gift to you.”

Inhwan blinked at Yukwon first before turning to his hand, and taking the neatly wrapped birthday gift. “Thanks, but what do you mean by first?” she asked, an eyebrow raised. “Can I open it now?”

“That is my D-5 gift for you,” Yukwon smiled proudly at her. “You can open it anytime you want, but I don’t want to see your face once you see what’s inside, so no,” he said, putting his hands on his waist.

Inhwan rolled her eyes. “You don’t have to give me five gifts, you idiot. You’re wasting your money.”

“It’s my money,” Yukwon repeated. “I can do whatever I want with it. Should I put it in your bag for you?”

“Yes,” Inhwan replied simply as she gave the box back to Yukwon and turned her back on him. “It’s not your money, it’s your parents’.”

“Whatever. You’re going to like everything I’m going to give you this time, I swear,” Yukwon said with a smile as she put the box inside Inhwan’s bag and zipped it close. “Because they are all from me,” he added as they continued walking.

“I’m curious,” Inhwan said.

“You don’t sound like you are,” Yukwon chuckled.

When Inhwan was already in the classroom, she went quickly to her seat, opened her bag and took the box out. Looking outside the classroom to make sure Yukwon isn’t around anymore, she tore the gift wrapper and opened the box like an excited child opening her Christmas gift.

All her excitement turned to disappointment when she saw a pink headband with two crocheted flowers on the side.

I hate pink, she thought. But since this is from Yukwon, she smiled as she wore it on her head.

“Wow, you’re a girl today.”

Inhwan had to convince herself she didn’t hear Joon’s comment.

-

“Why is your bag so big today, by the way?” Inhwan asked as they sat inside the bus on their way home.

Yukwon was hugging his bag ever since they got in the bus, as if someone was going to steal it from him for having something so expensive in it.

Yukwon answered, “I’m the Running Man today.”

Inhwan’s eyebrow twitched.

When they reached the bus stop that was a few blocks away from Inhwan’s house, Yukwon insisted that he walk her home. And when they were finally in front of Inhwan’s house, Yukwon had to quickly open his bag and give Inhwan his ‘D-4 birthday gift’.

“Wow, I wonder how you got to ask money from your parents,” Inhwan said as she took the box the size of a 13-inch laptop from Yukwon.

“I saved money for a year, okay,” Yukwon deadpanned at her as he zipped his bag close. “By the way, I was really glad to see you wearing that headband for the second time.”

Inhwan nodded once. “It’s pretty, so I wore it.”

“Of course, you’re pretty.”

“I meant the headband,” Inhwan raised an eyebrow.

“It was pretty because the one who’s wearing it is pretty,” Yukwon smiled proudly at her. Another cheesy line, yes!

“Whatever, being cheesy doesn’t suit you, Kim Yukwon,” Inhwan rolled her eyes.

“But you like hearing those words from me, right?” Yukwon said with a smile as he slung a strap of his backpack on his right shoulder.

“Go home!!” Inhwan blushed, but she was lucky enough to not be seen since it’s dark. “It’s getting late.”

“Okay,” Yukwon said as he started walking. “Bye, Inhwan. I love you!”

“Bye,” Inhwan rolled her eyes, hugging the present tightly in her arms. “I do like hearing those words from you, Yukwon... and I love you too.” With a smile smile, not being able to see Yukwon’s figure anymore, Inhwan went into the house quickly, slamming the gate close as well as the main door, and then running to her room and slamming the door close too. Throwing her bag carelessly behind her, she jumped on her bed and ripped the gift wrapper as fast as she could. Her eyes widened in surprise after opening the box where inside was a neatly folded pink blouse with a black lace and pink ribbon in front.

“Holy shit, Yukwon, this is not a joke,” she muttered through clenched teeth, but she was all too awed by how beautiful the blouse was.

Yukwon amuses her to no end.

-

“Sorry, I can’t walk you home today, Inhwan,” Yukwon said regretfully as he walked with Inhwan to the school gates. “It’s been a while since I went out with Kyung and the others so I can’t say no.”

“It’s fine,” Inhwan said to him. “No problem,” she smiled. When she faced Yukwon, her eyes slightly widened when she saw another box in his hands.

“Here, take this,” Yukwon said, giving her the box.

“Shit, Yukwon,” was all Inhwan could say.

Yukwon chuckled, “I would accept that as a ‘thank you’.”

Inhwan sighed. “I’ve received enough gifts from you, Yukwon. This is too much already,” she told him. She was about to give him back the box, but thought it was a disrespectful thing to do so she pushed the idea into the back of her head and hugged the gift instead, making Yukwon smile. “Thanks, though.”

Yukwon chuckled. “No problem, babe.”

Inhwan’s eyes widened. “What?!”

Yukwon stuck his tongue out at her. “Go home.”

Inhwan rolled her eyes. “Bye,” Inhwan said as she slowly turned on her heels. She was about to leave when she heard Yukwon speak again.

“Inhwan, can I kiss you?”

She stiffened.

She walked limply towards her bed, sat down heavily and then sighed. With the gift tightly in her left arm, she touched her right cheek with her other hand and mumbled, “It was our first... kiss?” The uncertainty in her voice made her statement sound like a question. “Holy shit,” the kiss made her weak.

Swallowing, she looked down at the box, pushing it off her chest. Then she sighed, preparing herself mentally to what she’s about to see in the box this time. And then she started tearing the wrapper off the box, careful this time unlike the last two nights. Biting on her lower lip, she heaved another sigh before opening the box. It was a skirt this time, pleated and black, together with a brown leather belt.

Yukwon, what the fuck are you doing to me? She thought.

-

They were facing each other quietly for a few seconds already.

Yukwon had to swallow down the lump in his throat before finally making the first move, taking out yet another box from her bag and then giving it gently to Inhwan. “My... D-2 gift,” he said to her.

“I can’t accept it, Yukwon,” Inhwan said with a sigh, disappointed in herself.

“What? No. You can’t do that,” Yukwon said, panic written all over his face.

“What is it this time? A pair of shoes? Yukwon I-”

“Yes, it is,” Yukwon chuckled. “Now that you guessed it right, you don’t have the right to reject this,” he said, shoving the box into Inhwan’s arms. “I guess you already know I gave you a set of clothes, right? I can’t give you the best accessories... earrings, necklaces, bracelets... so I just gave you the best looking hair accessory I saw in the mall last week,” he explained. “Mom said you would look good wearing pink stuff, so... yeah...” he looked away and started chewing on his lip.

“Yukwon...” Inhwan sighed.

Yukwon chuckled before stealing a peck on Inhwan’s left cheek and running away. “Bye, Inhwan! Tomorrow’s a very big day for us!”

“Damn you,” Inhwan muttered as she looked down on the box.

But she would have to say she’s excited to see what’s inside.

So when she got inside her room, skipping dinner for the third consecutive night, she quickly tore the wrapper off and opened the box with trembling hands.

“Goddamn Yukwon,” she said through clenched teeth upon seeing a pair of black heels in the box.

Under the said gift was a pink post-it note. With crinkled eyebrows, Inhwan peeled the note off the box and read Yukwon’s messy (he did it on purpose) handwriting.

Operation: Turn Inhwan into a girl five days before her birthday, 80% complete! \o/

Unknowingly, a smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

-

Inhwan was surprised when Yukwon didn’t give her anything right at the day of her birthday. With a confused look written all over her face, she watched Yukwon disappear slowly down the street. She sighed. She expected too much that the disappointment slapped her across the face so hard. With another sigh, she turned on her heels and went into the house.

What she didn’t know was Yukwon was hiding behind a street light, a smile on his lips. He looked down at his wristwatch and whispered, “A few more hours, baby.”

She heard three knocks on her door before it opened slowly. “Honey, are you not going to eat your chocolate cake?” her Mom asked worriedly, entering the room and walking towards Inhwan who was lying on her stomach on the bed.

“I’m not in the mood, sorry Mom,” she said sadly.

“Aww,” Inhwan’s Mom cooed as she sat next to Inhwan. “Who made our Inhwan sad on her birthday?” she asked, patting her daughter’s head.

“It’s nothing,” she sighed.

“Do you miss Yukwon? Do you want me to call his Mom and ask if she could let Yukwon stay with you for the night?”

Inhwan sat up quickly, shaking her head in horror. “No! No, don’t do that Mom! I’m fine! Look, I’m fine, oh?”

Her Mom laughed. “Of course you are, baby,” she said, ruffling Inhwan’s fringe. That was when she noticed Inhwan’s new headband. “Oh, did Yukwon give you that?”

Inhwan blushed and then nodded.

“Even the pink blouse and black skirt I saw in your closet last night?”

Inhwan nodded again. “He even gave me... a pair of heels,” she said shyly, pointing at the box next to her bag on the floor.

Her Mom looked briefly at it before turning back to Inhwan with a smile. “Our Inhwan’s growing into a beautiful young lady because of her best friend,” she said sweetly. “I can’t wait to see you dating Yukwon.”

“What? What did you- date? Yukwon??” she stammered, her cheeks getting hot. “Mom! Yukwon is my best friend, okay?”

She laughed. “So what? Nobody said your best friend can’t be your boyfriend.”

“Mom!” Inhwan turned redder.

She laughed. “Oh well, you have to sleep now baby, good night and happy birthday again!” She smiled at Inhwan before placing a kiss on her forehead.

“Yes, Mom,” Inhwan said as she watched her mom walk to the door. She smiled once more to Inhwan before turning the lights off and leaving. With a sigh, Inhwan lied on her bed and stared at the ceiling. “Yukwon... and I... dating?”

Tok! Tok!

She looked at the window and her eyes widened, surprised to see Yukwon just outside her room. As quick as lightning, Inhwan jumped off her bed and opened the window for her best friend. “What the fuck are you doing here???” she asked, whispering as loud as she could so that only Yukwon could hear.

“Giving you your last birthday gift,” Yukwon said before pulling Inhwan into a kiss.

Inhwan pulled away just as Yukwon was about to deepen it. “What did you just do?!” She asked, her cheeks scorching hot from blushing so badly that she thought she was standing in front of a fire.

“Kissing you,” Yukwon said simply.

Inhwan was going to say something when Yukwon took her by the shoulder, spun them both around and pushed her on the wall. “Happy birthday, Inhwan,” he said, his voice not happy but dark, before kissing Inhwan on the neck and then sucking on her skin, leaving his mark and claiming her as his property.

Inhwan didn’t know she was going to make that sound at her first day of being a teenager.
