Drifting Hearts: Ready, Steady, Bake

Jensen folds his arms on top of his desk, and rests his head against them. He yawns as he turns his head, the yawn turning to a smile as he watches Jared and Jesse in the kitchen. The smile widens as there’s a clatter, a mixing bowl falling to the floor in a sticky mess.

“Uh oh.” Jesse looks up at Jared, eyes widening into that innocent puppy look he seems to have perfected so well.

Jared crouches down and collects up the bowl. He stares at the ruined brownie mix. “Uh oh, indeed.” He gets to his feet and puts the bowl in the sink, grabbing a towel off the side.

“I’m sorry.” Jesse toes the floor with his sneaker, blond bangs in his eyes as he holds his hands behind his back, and gives a small sway to his body.

Jared laughs and ruffles Jesse’s hair. “You little creep.” He bends back down and starts scooping the mix up into a single puddle. “Go and see if Jensen wants to help you make another mix up.”

Jesse smiles and runs through to the main room. “Jensen, Jared says that you have to come and help.”

Jensen lifts his head from his arms, a quick glance to his essay notes. “He did, did he?” Jensen looks through to the kitchen, Jared rolling his eyes.

“Yep,” Jesse declares.

“Well, suppose I better come and sort you guys out, hadn’t I?” Jensen gets out of his seat, Jesse’s hand slipping into his. He follows Jesse to the kitchen, a smile as they find Jared on his knees clearing up the dropped brownie mixture.

“There’s another pack in the cupboard.” Jared looks up as they pass him. “We should have enough other stuff to make another batch.”

Jensen laughs and pulls open the cupboard. “I can’t believe you spent nearly an hour sorting out ingredients, measuring and stirring, and then you went and dropped it.”

“Don’t look at me,” Jared says. “It’s butterfingers there.” He points to Jesse and stands up, throwing the dirtied towel into the sink with the bowl from the first attempt.

Jesse pouts and wraps his hand in the bottom of Jensen’s shirt.

“I hope you never get a role as a chef in anything.” Jensen smirks as he takes the second box of brownie mix from the cupboard. “You’d probably end up burning the set down.”

Jared sighs and grabs a second mixing bowl from one of the cupboards. He holds it out to Jensen, a smile as Jensen’s fingers brush his. “I’ll have you know I’m a great cook. You have seen, and eaten, the evidence on many occasions.” Jared leans back against the sink and watches Jensen start to read the back of the box.

Jensen frowns and looks at Jared. “What the hell have you been doing? An egg, water and oil? What was with all the measuring and stuff?”

Jared shrugs. “I had to make it look good.”

Jensen rolls his eyes and goes to the refrigerator. He takes out an egg, before returning to the cupboard and finding the cooking oil. “Water,” he states as he starts to follow the recipe.

Jared fills a jug and hands it to Jesse, who takes it to Jensen.

Jensen takes the water and then pulls up a stool from the breakfast table, lifting Jesse up to sit beside him. “You wanna stir?”

Jesse smiles and holds out his hand for the wooden spoon.

Jensen stands behind him, hands on Jesse’s waist as the boy starts to stir the mixture into a paste. Jensen jumps as he finds Jared behind him, hands now on his waist as well.

“How’s the essay?” Jared asks, his chin resting on Jensen’s shoulder.

Jensen turns his face, pressing a kiss to the side of Jared’s face. “Nearly there. I have the first two sections done. Just need to turn the rest of my notes into something profound.”

Jared smiles and wraps his hands around Jensen’s waist.

Jensen relaxes into Jared’s hold. “Thank you for entertaining him.”

“Least I could do.” Jared lays a light kiss to Jensen’s cheek. “Think I need to brush up on my math a little though for the next homework.”

Jensen laughs. He looks over Jesse’s shoulder. “That looks great.” He reaches his hands under Jesse’s arms, and wraps one around the bowl and then the other over Jesse’s hand around the spoon. He gives the mix a firm stir and then reaches for the chocolate chunks. He opens the packet and hands it to Jesse, watching as he pours them into the sticky paste. “Okay, one more stir.”

Jesse sticks out his tongue in concentration as he and Jensen stir the spoon.

“Wow. That looks really yummy, Jesse,” Jared says encouragingly as he slides his arms from around Jensen. He collects the sheeted baking tray and lays it on the unit. “Okay. This is the bit that kind of went wrong last time.”

Jensen sighs and picks up the bowl. “You two are hopeless.” Jensen turns around, not realising Jesse has at that moment decided to jump down off the stool.

There’s a gasp and a laugh, a bumping of bodies as sticky chocolate mixture once more falls to the floor.

Jesse looks at his covered hands and then up at Jensen, mixture splattered up his chest. He opens his mouth and gapes, just standing and staring, unsure what to do.

Jensen moves the bowl away from his chest and places it on the unit. He looks down at the smeared mess on his t-shirt and the sticky droplets that have fallen to the tiled floor.

Jared bites on his lip as he tries to stop himself from laughing again. “Oh, Jen, dude.”

“Don’t say anything.” Jensen takes a steadying breath, hands held out in front of him.

Jesse brings his hands up to his face and smiles as he starts to lick his hands.

Jared laughs and wipes a finger across Jensen’s chest, a taste of the mixture. “Tastes nice.”

Jensen can’t help but smile, Jesse and Jared licking chocolate mixture off their hands, a small amount smeared at the corner of both their mouths. He pushes his finger in the sticky mess and tastes the mix.

If he can’t beat them, he might as well join them. He smiles and leans down, a chocolate kiss to Jesse’s cheek. “You wanna come to the store and buy some brownies?”

Jesse grins and nods his head.

“Go get changed and we’ll go get some.” Jensen pats Jesse on the butt encouraging him through to his room. He watches as Jesse runs out of the kitchen and then he stands back up.

“No more baking?” Jared pretends to pout.

Jensen laughs and moves forwards, arms wrapping around Jared before he has chance to stop him.

“Aww, man.” Jared can feel the cool mix pressing against him.

Jensen grins and snuggles up against Jared. “Still want a taste?”

Jared laughs and leans down for a kiss. “I always want a taste.”

Jensen blushes and lowers his head.

Jared smiles and tucks a finger under Jensen’s chin, raising his boyfriend’s face for another kiss. “I’m so glad you came back with me.”

Jensen nudges his nose against Jared’s. “Thank you for helping me do this. For Jesse and school, and well…” Jensen raises a hand and cups Jared’s cheek. “Just thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Jared leans forward, more kisses.

“I’m ready. Come on, come on.”

Jensen pulls back and looks to the doorway, Jesse standing with his coat on.

“Brownies. Come on.” Jesse smiles sweetly, those puppy eyes looking from Jensen to Jared.

Jensen smiles, Jesse so much more like the little boy Jensen had longed for him to be. “I’ll be right with you,” he tells him. “I just need to get changed.” He looks back to Jared and smiles. “You wanna come?”

“Sure.” Jared nods, one more kiss. “I love you, you know that right?”

Jensen looks up at Jared’s eyes, and runs his thumb over Jared’s cheek as he says, “I love you too.”
