CHARACTER INFO
Character name: Sha Gojyo
Fandom: Saiyuki Reload
Point in canon taken from: The end of Saiyuki Reload: Volume 5

Appearance: Gojyo is a tall and strapping fellow with long red hair (and two antennae-looking bangs), and red eyes that mark him as half-youkai, half-human. He wears a brown headband around his forehead that is the same color as his jacket. Under the jacket he wears a white shirt with black pants. Under his left eye are two mysterious lines. He is armed with a shakugetsujyo, which is a staff with a crescent-shaped blade on top, and a chain attached to the blade for long range attacks.

Personality: Gojyo is pretty laid back and amiable most of the time. One must really piss him off to get a look at his bad side. He has a soft spot for children and women because of his own history. When it comes to women, Gojyo is definitely a womanizer and a fan of one-night stands.

He's a chain smoker and almost always has a cigarette in his hand. It's said in the manga that he smokes way more than Sanzo. When it comes to his relationships with other people, Gojyo is closest to Hakkai (his roommate), and Goku. Though he and Goku fight near-constantly, he seems to regard Goku as a younger sibling and looks out for him. Sanzo and Gojyo do not have a good relationship at all. It's rather dysfunctional, and many of their arguments end with Sanzo shooting or threatening to shoot him. They disagree a lot, and have very different personalities and ways of doing things. Still, when it comes to letting Sanzo die or saving His Holiness's hide, Gojyo will step in and keep the bastard priest alive.

On occasion through their journey, Gojyo has seen his elder brother, who changed his name to Dokugakuji after he killed his mother and left. They fight each other for what they each believe is right, but there seems to be understanding between them rather than hatred, as it is with the rest of Kougaiji's minions and Sanzo's group.

History: Gojyo was born as half-kappa, a water imp, and a half-human. His father was a youkai, and his mother was his human mistress who were killed when he was young, leaving his stepmother to raise him. As a child he was constantly abused my his step-mother because of his heritage. She hated the fact that he was the child of another woman. His only support came from his brother, Sha Jien. Gojyo hated seeing his step-mother cry, and every time he tried to comfort her, she would beat him and Jien would have to comfort her with sex. When she tried to kill him, Gojyo's brother stepped in and killed her instead, letting his little brother live.

As an adult, and likely as a teenager, Gojyo survived through gambling at the card tables and using his gambling talent to pick up ladies to get him through the night. Though a bit of a pervert, he's never terribly obnoxious about it (unless he's trying to get on somebody's nerves... which is kind of often).

The first member of the group that Gojyo ever met was Hakkai (who was then known as Cho Gono). He found him lying on the ground in the rain, wounded and presumably not that long on life after killing 1000 members of the youkai clan who kidnapped his lover/sister (and raped and imprisoned her). Gojyo takes him in and helps him because Gono's eyes seemed to be asking Gojyo to kill him. He nurses Gono back to health, and Gono is confronted by the last surviving member of the clan. After all this mess, Gono changes his name to Hakkai and is permitted to live with Gojyo where Sanzo can keep an eye on him.

It took a long time for Gojyo to get over the obvious marks of him being a half-breed. He did not like the redness of them, because it made him think of blood, thanks in part to his late step-mother. After the whole mess with Hakkai, Gojyo cuts his hair off, deciding to grow it out after Sanzo decides he likes it better than Gojyo moping about its color. This event is also important because it is how the four members of the group first meet. If Sanzo hadn't taken Goku with him on his mission to capture Gono, they might have never met and formed such interesting friendships.

Years pass relatively peacefully with Gojyo and Hakkai doing the occasional odd job for Sanzo. DUring this time, Gojyo came across his current weapon, the Shakugetsujou. While he and Goku were messing around in the storage room of the temple at Chang'an, they broke two vases and their weapons came to them. It is said that the weapon will be his and only his until his death.

One day, a calamity strikes the peaceful land of Shangri La and many of the youkai go insane, attacking and eating humans. Because of his mixed heritage, Gojyo is unaffected. Sanzo is ordered by the Three Aspects to take his "friends" (Gojyo, Hakkai, and Goku) and head west to stop the calamity. Along the way, they have many adventures and are almost constantly under attack from the youkai attempting to get Sanzo's remaining sutra.

There are not many plot points that relate specifically to Gojyo, however, there are a few. Gojyo is also the one who holds Goku still long enough for his shattered limiter to be replaced after Goku goes ape-shit (pun intended!) when Sanzo is shot by Rikudo. He also lets Sanzo sneak off oncehe's recovered to deal with Rikudo. After that, Chin Yisou attacks the group, going after Hakkai. He plants a seed in Gojyo's chest that will turn Gojyo into a plant if it isn't stopped. Sanzo is forced to shoot Gojyo to stop it.

Later, when fighting Kougaiji in the desert, Goku is forced to remove his limiter to defeat the youkai lord and rescue Sanzo. Gojyo and Hakkai fail to stop him. Afterward when Goku is bandaging Gojyo's wounds, Gojyo upsets Goku. The younger male apologizes, and Gojyo pulls him close in an attempt to comfort him. When that fails to work, he drops his foot on Goku's head.

In another town a little later on, Gojyo is out doing the shopping in Hakkai's place and he comes across a little boy named Kinkaku. Sucker for children that he is, Gojyo buys him a drink and listens to his story. When the boy asks about his friends, Gojyo complains about them, needing to vent, the boy decides to repay him by getting rid of his friends. He attacks them, and Gojyo returns home to see them apparently dead. Sanzo manages to stay concious, and he informs Gojyo what happened. The gourd that the kid had been carrying had sucked out the souls of Hakkai and Goku. Sanzo and Gojyo leave, intending to track down the kid and fight with each other the whole way. While looking for the kid, they are attacked by assassins. The leader of the youkai knocks Sanzo off a cliff, and Gojyo saves him with the chain of his Shakugetsujou. They run into Kinkaku and fight with him and the monster he's with. Gojyo takes Sanzo's gun when the priest asks and accidentally shoots and destroys the gourd, freeing Hakkai and Goku's souls. Kinkaku stops fighting them, and defends the monster when it attacks until it turns on Kinkaku. The monster of a man behind Kinkaku's tragedy shows himself then, a man in the robes of a Sanzo who goes by "Kami-sama".

The next morning, the others wake up, and Gojyo is gone. Sanzo makes the decision to press on without him, and things are noticably different from normal; his absence definitely interrupts the group dynamic. Everybody ends up acting rather strange, and seems to miss him (even Sanzo seems to, as Hakkai points out the differences in his behavior). When a group of youkai attack, breaking up their argument about the situation, the remainder of the group decides to go find Gojyo and kill him for making everything so weird and causing them trouble. Eventually they find Gojyo and utterly fail to defeat Kami-sama. They flee to recover from their wounds, angry at their defeat. The second time around, they beat him.

They continue on for awhile, fighting bad guys and doing their best to save the world, when they meet a man who calls himself Bishop Hazel and his humongous side kick, Gat. Hazel is a bishop from a western continent. Judging by his accent (and his cowboy hat), he's likely American. Hazel uses the people he's brought back to life to attack the boys, because Sanzo is traveling with Youkai, and tries to get Sanzo on his side and to leave the others. Sanzo doesn't like it, so after a couple misadventures with Hazel, they fight with him about the differences in their morals and beliefs. The fight is interrupted by a small youkai child. Hazel tries to convince the kid to die to save a human child's life; Sanzo convinces the kid to live. The group decides that it'll be a race to see who accomplishes their goal first, and part ways.

Example journal: [voice]
[Gojyo is talking to himself, unaware that he's hit the voice feature.]

Huh? Hey, what the fuck is this place and why can't I get this damn thing off my arm? The last thing I remember was being in Jeep! What the hell is going on? This place is fucking ugly. Why the fuck is everything so fancy here? I gotta find the others, find how we got here.

Example tag: The forests of Shangri-La were dark at night. The only light filtering through the dense canopy and down to the occupants of the jeep came through the occasional opening in the layers and layers of leaves and branches. Next to him, the monkey snored as the jeep rattled on over the rough terrain. The front seat was silent, Sanzo having long since nodded off like Goku or fallen into introspective silence as Hakkai focused on the road ahead.

Night time was always nice when there were no groups of youkai attacking them to break up the peace and quiet with their irritating, repetitive speeches and equally terrible fighting styles. It was a time for silence, for non-thought, for just enjoying the silence of forced company and taking a moment to enjoy the feeling of the tobacco feeling your lungs and watching the translucent tendrils of smoke dance away into the night air, an invisible trace of the path left behind.

The silence was golden tonight, and nobody seemed to want to talk about Hazel anymore, having exhausted the topic of the stupid fucker. Gojyo's fist clenched a little on his lap only to unfist to move a lock of red hair whipped into his face by the wind. Well, he didn't want to hear about that anymore anyway. The thought of what that fucker had wanted to do to that poor kid pissed him the hell off. The thought of what Hazel wanted to do to the world made him feel sick. Hazel wanted genocide.

Gojyo wanted to rip off his head.

It wasn't any mystery what the man would have done to the kid if they hadn't been there to stop it. If Sanzo hadn't stepped in, would they have watched the kid die?

No, Gojyo told himself. Of course they wouldn't have. They weren't the types to just stand idly by and let something like that happen.

With a quiet sigh, he leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. Thinking on it now wouldn't do any good. It was over and done with, and that was just going to have to be enough for now.
