Comic-Con Wrap

Hi guys,

I wanted to share some of my favorite moments of 2010's SDCC. It's hard to believe it was my 8th! It seems like I was just a newbie there to see a Farscape panel last year.

Not sure if it's my patience, the fact that I was there all four days, or the conditions, but the dealer room seemed even worse this year. The WB just needs to suck it up and either get a bigger booth or do their autographs in one of the hotels and broadcast them on TVs at the booth. It seemed like there were constantly SDPD clearing the aisle because that booth was a fire marshall's nightmare.

My favorite panels:

*  Leverage: I love seeing a cast that really enjoys each other. This bunch plays off each other as much in real life as they do on the show, and they genuinely seemed to revel in the fan reactions. They showed us a clip of the episode that aired tonight - and can I just squee that it was preceded tonight by the one with Christian Kane singing, guest starring Alona Tal (Jo from Supernatural) and John Schneider (Pa Kent from Smallville)?

Also? We're bad. We got the entire set of Hacker, Hitter, Grifter, Thief, and Mastermind shirts, even though we were only supposed to get one each. I never saw them turning anyone away for those, so I didn't feel terribly guilty.

*  Futurama: I think the Puddle had as much fun as we did for this one. The Comic-Con 3010 clip had so freaking many awesome gags and in-jokes and the voice actors were funny as all hell. You can tell how much fun Groening has with this one.

*  V: This was a show I got into kind of tentatively because the original was one of my first exposures to science fiction, but I was impressed. The cast seems pretty great, and it was fun to see a woman anchor a cast the way Elizabeth Mitchell does. She always seems put-together onscreen, but her eloquence off-the-cuff was impressive. She was gracious about her Emmy nom and very sweet with the Comic-Con crowd. I've seen few actors who are that genuine in their appreciation of the con crowd. Most have gratitude tempered with wide-eyed wonder and a little fear. I'm sure she got a good introduction with LOST, but hers was filter-free. Laura Vandervoort, Morena Baccarin, and Elizabeth were really funny together, and Logan Huffman reminded me a little of Tom Welling after season 2.

*  Fringe: I thought it was hillarious how surprised John Noble seemed at the fact that his character got the most cheers. I'm so out of fandom in general that I had no idea Anna Torv was from Oz, so that was a neat surprise. Jasika's story about how her sister's Asperger's gave her a lot to draw from for alter-Astrid was really cool. Also? Joshua Jackson is really funny (his bong impression rocked) and I love how he supported his castmates when there were lulls in the banter.

From the EP's, I really enjoyed hearing about the intentionality behind their balance of standalone eps and longer arcs. "Mythalones" is a good way to describe the more accessible episodes with mythology woven in.

*  Castle: First and most obvious, I suppose, is the fact that Nathan Fillion is funny and definitley not lacking in confidence. He hogged the spotlight a bit, but no one minded and his castmates had a lot of fun making a show of keeping him in check. He and Stana read a passage from Heat Wave, and Andrew Marlowe shared that Nathan read with something like 125 actresses before they found chemistry like he has with Stana. He said they were equally selective with the rest of the cast. It shows!

The recurring theme in questions was "How do you people get anything done?" But they actually showcased just that in the panel. They kept playing off each other and bantering and in the process, they shared some great insights about the show and the choices each of them makes in creating it. This was by far my favorite panel.

I won the VIP autograph session, and I was stoked at the chance to meet Nathan and Stana since they were the only ones mentioned on the certificate. I got to catch up with a few of my Farscape friends while I was in line for that, so that was loads of fun. I was actually bouncing when we got into the room and the entire cast was there. Everyone was awesome. Here's how they rolled, in order:

For some reason, I never registered how big Nathan Fillion actually is till I met him. And good grief, the man is funny. I can die happy having been called "sweetness" by him. ;)

Molly is the sweetest thing and her costume (Uhura, with tricorder) was great. She spotted the Ben 10 buttons I picked up from Cartoon Network and was all excited because she's voicing a character in an upcoming episode. Seamus is as funny as Nathan. Jon was super-sweet, introducing himself properly to everyone and asking their name. Stana seemed nervous in the panel, but she was really gracious one-on-one and personalized everyone's autograph.

I also loved the chance to share feedback with the creator and EP, Andrew Marlowe. It wasn't fannish squee, since I really haven't touched that show from a fandom perspective yet. It was just the chance to share positive feedback. There's so little great TV out there, they deserve to know that what they're making stands out.

It's so easy for stars who have a lot of exposure to fans to turn a signing into an assembly line, but you could tell they were making a real effort to connect with their fans and it was super-fun because of it.

*  Sons of Anarchy: While I was getting my autographs, the hubby was in line for Sons of Anarchy. That one was kind of short, but it was cool to see Katey and Kurt interact. They didn't seem to love the Comic-Con crowd, but as the hubby said, that's part of their charm.
