Steve's eyes jerk open, his breaths panting out of his chest. There's a cold sweat gathering at his temples, but he ignores it. He knows what woke him. Again. It's the same dream - nightmare, his subconscious whispers -- that's woken him up every other night for the past six months. Every military person Steve knows has a 'mission gone wrong' story. Some are worse than others. His own is pretty damn bad. He can't help but go through the 'shoulda, coulda, wouldas', just like he does every other time. He should have seen the ambush; he could have told his superiors to scrub the mission; if only he would have... Damn it, this train of thought is going to get him nowhere. And he's got to be up in three hours to start his day. He gives a mental shrug, he's done more dangerous work on less sleep, and pushes the sheet away from his body. Two and a half hours later the stalls are mucked, each horse given a small treat, and he's got half of their saddles looking better than they did when they were purchased. Chin makes his way into the tack room.
"How long you been up Steve? And don't even think of BS'ing me, I've known you too long for it to work." Chin grabs a rag and the other leather cleaning kit and gets to work on another saddle.
"Just a couple hours. I'm good to go, don't worry about me. I know better than to work with the kids or horses when I'm too tired. There's a whole stack of paperwork just waiting in the office. I know my limits." Steve offers the compromise knowing it is really his only option.

Danny sees Dr. Kealani come out of her office, with Grace in front of her. She shakes her head sadly. Grace is still unwilling to talk about the hours after the accident that killed her mother. From what Danny had been able to gather from witness statements, Grace had been pulled from the wreckage by a group of 'thuggish looking guys' who had then placed her into an SUV and driven off. Something like 10 hours later Grace had been dropped off down the block from Danny's parents' house. Danny knew it was retaliation for him and his partner pulling Giovani Metucci, a well known Maffia Don, in for questioning. The therapist walks over to the reception desk and says something to one of the ladies there. Then she makes her way over to where Grace has joined Danny and sits down next to him. "I'm recommending Animal Assisted Therapy for Grace. This is a brochure for a Ranch on the island. It's called 'Ohana Ranch', and is run by a local. I've had a lot of success with the kids I've sent there. You can call to set up an appointment to tour the ranch and the owner will have you fill out some paperwork. If you're amenable, one of the forms will allow me to talk to him about Grace's situation. Obviously I wont tell him everything, only what I think is necessary to get Grace all the help she needs. I'll continue seeing Grace here one day a week. In a month we'll reevaluate and decide where to go from there."

Steve had balked at the idea of therapeutic horse riding when he first heard about it. He was at Walter Reed, recovering from injuries sustained on his last mission when he'd overheard a doctor recommending the therapy to another patient. Then he'd looked into it and he was amazed by the success stories. So when he was discharged from the hospital and put on reserve duty, Steve decided to go home and look into setting up a ranch. Hawaii, for all that it hadn't been his home since he turned 18 and joined the Navy, welcomed him back with open arms. He'd looked up Chin Ho Kelly, an old family friend, and found him working rubber gun duty. He was amenable to the idea of starting a therapy ranch; going so far as to rope his cousin, Kono, into the work. Kono, who'd started life on a surfboard like so many others on the islands, turned to physical therapy after an injury killed her dreams of competing in the circuit.
"Hey bossman, I just got off the phone with a prospective. The guy and his daughter will be here Saturday morning for the tour. He's a talker. Name's Danny Williams. His daughter, Grace, is seeing Dr. Kealani due to a traumatic kidnapping. Apparently the guy was a cop in Jersey. We got room for her, yeah?" Kono asks. They generally only take on six to eight people at a time, but Grace will make 10 which is going to be stretching it.
"I've been talking to Billy Hanamoa's therapist and she thinks he's doing good enough to move down to once a week. So, yeah, I think we can get Grace in," Steve says wondering, idly, why a cop from Jersey would come all the way to Hawaii.

Danny wasn't sure what to think of the ranch as he came up to it. Mostly because he'd spent the last three and a half miles wondering when the car was going to fall off the edge of the Earth. They'd moved from paved road to gravel, and from gravel to a small dirt path. Danny was not best pleased. So when he reached the fenced, gated property with a sign welcoming them to 'Ohana Ranch' Danny sent up a quick prayer of thanks that they'd gotten there in one piece. The man that was waiting to greet them on the other side of the gate made Danny say prayers for a whole other list of reasons.
Steve had decided to meet Danny and Grace Williams at the front gate, with Ahi. Ahi was a sorrel quarter horse, that Steve had taken to as soon as they'd met. All the horses were mild mannered, trained for therapy, and specialised riding. Ahi, being the biggest at 18 hands, tended to scare a lot of the kids. As the car carrying two figures -- whom Steve assumed to be Danny and Grace -- pulled to a stop on the paved pad, Steve got his first look at father and daughter. Steve could tell that Danny was working up a good head of steam; and Grace looked sullen and withdrawn. Some time on the ranch would fix them both up. Steve dismounted, looping the reins around a section of fencing, and made his way to the gate. He could hear Danny complaining from several yards away.
"I don't know if I feel comfortable bringing you here, Monkey. There's only a dirt path leading here, and I bet it's perched on the edge of a volcano. I think I'm going to have to have a talk with Dr. Kealani about recommending this place," Danny finishes his diatribe just as the tall man came to greet them.
"Aloha, I'm Steve McGarrett, I own the Ohana ranch. You must be Danny and Grace?" Steve waits until he gets an affirmative nod from Danny then continues, "If you'll follow me I'll show you around the place. I promise we're not perched on the edge of any volcanoes. My land actually backs up against some National Forest Preserve, which the state has allowed the ranch to use for trail rides." Steve can see that Grace is nervous as they approach Ahi so he squats down, to get on her level and reassure her. "Ahi is the gentlest horse you'll ever meet. Before you're done here you'll ride him at least once. But for your first few sessions we'll start you off on a smaller horse. Do you want to pet him?" He's not expecting a verbal response, he'd spoken to Dr. Kealani about Grace so he knows she's barely been able to get a dozen words out of the girl.
Grace looks to her father, seeking reassurance and approval and is glad when she receives both. She turns back to Steve and nods, a small smile just barely tipping up the edges of her mouth. Steve makes a couple of clicking noises, after unlooping the reigns from the fence, and a few small hand motions and just like that the horse moves til he's standing in front of Grace then he ducks his head down so she can reach without having to stretch. She rubs, gently between the horses eyes, from the top of his blaze all the way down to his nose and back up again. Then Steve hands her a carrot and says, "Rest the carrot on your palm and keep your hand flat. Just like that, very good. Now hold it out to him and he'll take it right off your palm." The horse does exactly what Steve said he would, and the smile Grace sends her father could light up the whole island. Right then Steve knows he's got them. Something in his gut is telling him if he plays his cards right he can have them forever. Steve likes the sound of that.
Danny knows Grace is sold on the place as soon as the horse eats the carrot out of her hand. As they tour the facility Danny comes to realise he's all in too. The stables, and corrals are in excellent shape, not falling apart like Danny thought they would be from the state of the entrance road. And Steve knows his business, even seems to love it, if the fondness with which he introduces the staff and horses are anything to go by. Danny feels something uncoil and loosen in his chest. He knows he's been holding onto a lot of grief and resentment since the accident. But he feels like, maybe here, he can let that all go. Maybe here he can really start over.
"So what now?" Danny asks as the three make their way back to the main gate. He knows they've been here a few hours, but it feels like no time at all has passed.
"I would imagine we'll work with Grace three days a week to start, then as she starts doing better we'll cut it back. For now lets head back to the main house and I'll have you fill out some basic paperwork." Steve kneels down in front of Grace again. "It was very nice to meet you, Grace. I think with a little bit of work we'll have you on your way to feeling better in no time." Steve manages to get another smile out of the little girl. This is going to be a tough one, he thinks. He's looking forward to it.
They're back on the main, paved, road before Grace says anything. Danny savors every word, it was two weeks after the accident and abduction before Grace uttered a peep, so Danny cherishes every word his daughter says now. "Do I really get to go there, daddy? It seems like a good place."
"Yeah, Gracie. I think it's going to be good for both of us. Which horse is your favorite?" Danny really wants to keep the conversation going.
"They were all so pretty. I don't know if I can pick a favorite. Is that okay?" Grace asks, unsure of herself now.
"That's absolutely fine, Monkey. You don't have to have one favorite." Danny hates that his confident, outspoken Grace was taken away by those bastards. This shy, quiet wallflower is breaking his heart. Jail time isn't enough for those bastards. He would love nothing more than to see them all rot in hell. Danny feels his grip on the steering wheel tighten as his anger flares, and he takes a few deep breaths, tries to let it go. He's done everything he can, he moved halfway around the world so that Grace would feel safe enough to get in a car again. He knows nothing he says or does will bring back Rachel, so he lets it all go. As they pull up to Amy Hanamoa's house Danny stops the car and turns to Grace. "I know today was a big day, and a tough one, but I still gotta work tonight. You'll be okay staying with Miss Amy and Billy, right?"
"I wish you didn't have to go in tonight. But I understand. You gotta catch the bad guys, so they don't hurt anyone," Grace says with a pout.
"That's right Monkey. But you know you can call me any time you need to. I'll pick up the phone no matter what I'm doing," Danny tries to assure her.
Grace starts at the Ranch on Monday. She immediately takes to a Paint named Mana. "Do you know what Mana means in Hawaiian, Grace?" She's so quiet around strangers that Steve has to watch for her visual cues to know when she's responding. This time she shakes her head back and forth, just once. "It means 'strength', I think he'll be a good horse for you. You wanna learn how to brush him down?" Steve watches for her to nod. "Okay, I'm just gonna run into the tack room and grab a couple brushes. You can hang out here and get to know Mana." He'd almost suggested she go with him, so she would get more comfortable with where the equipment is. But something Dr. Kealani said came back to him. From what little Grace would say about her ordeal she had been kept in a small dark shed, with very little natural light. That pretty much described the tack room to a 't'. They could work on getting her used to that later.
Danny is only ever able to either drop Grace off or pick her up from her ranch time, stupid work schedule. So it's almost three weeks before he gets to see her actually interacting with the staff and horses. It's almost like his Monkey is back when she runs straight to the barn without asking permission; it warms Danny's heart. He lets her go without reprimand. Danny knows Grace is safe here. He's used his police credentials to look into Steve McGarrett's background, and while he's not happy about all the 'confidential', and 'need higher clearance' messages he got; it actually makes him feel okay about leaving Grace here.
"Danno, come meet Mana. He's the horse I've been working with!" Grace calls getting to the barn's entrance well before Danny. Danny notes that Grace is literally bouncing with excitement, to be able to show her dad around. When he catches up to her, Danny sees her smile. It could outshine the sun. A weight he didn't even know he'd been carrying is lifted off his shoulders. They are going to be okay. Danny's not surprised when Steve comes over to join them in front of Mana's stall. From what he read, Steve likes to be involved in every aspect of whatever he's taking on. Danny appreciates that.
"Detective Williams, are you going to be able to stay the whole time?" Steve asks and it's not accusatory, like Danny would have expected, it's pure and simple curiosity.
"Please call me Danny," Danny says and continues when Steve acknowledges his request, "We just closed a huge case that had me working a lot of long hours so I wrangled a few days off. If it's okay, I'd like to come to a few appointments?"
"Of course it's okay. We appreciate parental involvement whenever possible," Steve says moving to open the stall door. "Grace, would you grab a brush from the tack room, you can show your dad where the saddles, bridles, and reins are." This will only be the second time Grace has gone to the equipment room by herself, but Steve knows she needs to be able to do this to get her confidence back up.
"Okay Steve. Danno come on, I'll show you my favorite saddle." She's already pulling her father toward the far end of the barn when she turns back to where Steve is getting ready to go into Mana's stall. "It's in there right? No one else is using it today?" She asks, bold as anything.
"As far as I know it should be in there," Steve says, rather amazed at the fact that Grace had finally stated a firm opinion on something. They were definitely making progress and Steve couldn't be prouder. Steve is checking Mana's feet and talking softly to the horse when Grace and Danny come back. Grace is carrying a medium sized, stiff-bristle brush and is explaining its use to Danny as they enter the stall.
"You should brush a horse's hair every day, it helps the horse make oils and keeps their hide clean," Grace says with firm patience. Steve is hiding his laugh by focusing on the horse's hoof.
"Do they get a bath everyday though? 'Cause I would think that would be important," Danny questions, wanting to keep Grace talking, now that he's found a subject that she'll talk about at length.
"No. Most horses go their whole lives without getting a bath. Usually you only give a horse a bath if you're gonna show it, or if it's been working real hard, and it's super hot out," Grace finishes, looking to Steve to make sure she's giving correct information.
"That's absolutely right, Grace. I'm glad to see you're passing on the knowledge you learn here," Steve says giving the girl and her father a warm smile. He watches as Grace brushes as much of the horse as she can reach, handing her father the brush to get the majority of his back. It's cute watching her admonish her 'Danno' when he starts brushing 'against the grain.' Mana expresses his displeasure at the situation with a quiet whicker and a side-step. Grooming accomplished, Grace explains how to put the blanket down before the saddle, then Steve steps back in. "Why don't I take care of the rest?" he asks gently, not wanting to discourage Grace's progress. He talks through the process explaining his reasoning as he goes. "It's a matter of making sure the saddle is secure. Too loose and the rider could fall off; too tight and it'll hurt the horse. Then there's making sure the bit is sitting in the horses mouth properly. If it's not it'll hurt the horse's mouth." Once all the tack is in place, Steve takes the reins to lead the horse, and Grace takes her father by the hand to lead him, out of the stall so she can mount the horse.
Danny's heart feels about ten sizes too big for his chest as he watches Steve help Grace into the saddle. Grace is smiling so wide Danny hopes she never stops. Steve hands the reins over to another employee as Grace calls out to her father to "Watch me, see how good I am."
"She's almost a completely different child to the one I brought here three weeks ago. It's really amazing what this place has done for her." Danny's eyes never leave the sight of his daughter riding the horse looking as carefree as an eight year old should.
"She's really come a long way. I try to let the kids have as much alone time with the horses as I can; treating that time as most would a regular therapy session. Most kids will talk to the horses, telling them things they wouldn't tell an adult. Horses won't judge, you see. I've overheard her telling Mana some of what happened to her mother, and consequently herself. It was a hell of a thing, and for what it's worth I'm sorry it happened," Steve finishes lamely. He thinks, sometimes, that he feels more comfortable talking to the horses than he does other adults too.
"I appreciate that. I think it hasn't affected me as deeply because Grace's mother and I had been divorced for over a year when it happened. I'm just glad this is helping Grace deal with things. I was worrying she'd never be able to work through this, but it seems like this place is definitely worth its weight," Danny says, focusing all of his attention back on Grace. She's been given the reins and the man who'd been helping her before is standing in the middle of the space calling commands to both Grace and the horse.
Steve watches Grace and Mana for a minute before turning his attention back to Danny. "So, I don't know if Grace has told you but we're having a traditional luau in a couple weeks for the clients and benefactors. It's going to be an all day, show-up-when-you-want thing; but we're putting together a little 'show' and award-type ceremony. It's more to show off how well the kids we've been working with are doing. Hopefully you and Grace will be able to come?"
"Yeah Grace mentioned something about it. I'm going to try to get the day off, but if a case comes up..." Danny lets the sentence fade, hoping it doesn't sound like he doesn't want to be there.
"I totally understand, but I really hope you can make it," Steve says and if his tone is a little more wistful than it should be he just hopes Danny doesn't notice.
For the next two weeks all Grace can talk about is The Ranch, and how pretty Mana is going to look with ribbons braided into his mane, and how she can't wait to see what a real traditional luau is like. The day of the party Grace wakes up with the sun and is bouncing on Danny's bed with the manic energy of the very, very young. Danny keeps her attention focused on other (not luau-related) things for what feels like 10 minutes before she's drawing pictures of herself sitting tall and proud on Mana's back while a blue ribbon is attached to his reins. Then she's asking every five minutes if it's time to go. By 10 am they are on the road and when they get to the ranch 45 minutes later there are already a small handful of cars parked on the paved pad. Danny just shakes his head when Grace complains about not being the first ones there.
Her upset is soon forgotten when they enter the barn and she gets her first look at Mana all gussied up. His tack has been cleaned and shined to within an inch of its life and he does in fact have a whole rainbow worth of ribbons braided into his mane. "See Danno, I told you he would look pretty."
"You were right, Monkey. He's the best looking horse in the whole barn," Danny agrees making his way over to the horse's stall. They wander around a bit, giving Grace an opportunity to talk to some of the other kids. As they are making their way back to Mana's stall Danny catches sight of Steve. Danny feels his heart melt a little when Steve squats down just outside of Grace's personal space. Dr. Kealani said Grace may not ever get over her fear of male strangers, but Steve is different somehow. From day one Grace has let him closer than anyone. Danny wonders if it's a 'shared trauma' thing. Either way he's not going to look a gift-horse in the mouth.
"Are you ready to show off Mana and eat some of the best food Hawaii has to offer?" Steve asks shooting big smiles at both Danny and Grace.
"Is it true that you really bury a pig for three days? That's what Tommy, in my class said," Grace asks with a look that's half horror, half disgust at the thought.
"It's usually a wild boar, and they are hunted because they are on the island in overabundance; and it's usually only for six or seven hours," Steve is quick to reassure the little girl who has managed to burrow her way into his heart. While he hopes that she does recover and eventually not need the ranch services he's going to miss both Danny and Grace when she stops coming.
"Monkey, what have I told you about listening to anything Tommy says?" Danny asks jovially.
"That I shouldn't 'cause he's a goof who's not worth my time," Grace parrots back, and Steve can tell this is probably not the first time they've had this conversation. She turns to Steve and directs her next query at him. "Can I give Mana some sugar cubes or carrots now, or will they upset his stomach?"
"I think Mana would like that. It won't bother his stomach at all. Hang tight and I'll grab a couple of each for you," Steve says standing with a slight grimace. Stupid leg.
The show and luau are a hit. All the kids go home with one award or another, Grace actually managing to 'take home' three (all of which she leaves tacked up to the door of Mana's stall). Steve is gratified to see several checks, for astounding sums of money, make their way to Jenna (the ranch's CFO). That money will assure that the ranch stays in operation for the next year. As the festivities are wrapping up Steve sees Danny trying to rouse a sleepy Grace so that they can go home. Steve isn't sure what he's going to say until he's standing in front of Danny. "You guys can crash here for the night. I've got plenty of room up at the house. You look like you're almost as asleep as Grace."
Danny hems and haws for a minute before he gives in. He knows he's just a little too tired, and possibly inebriated, to be driving right now. "Thanks, I appreciate the offer, man. I don't think I'm really in a fit state to drive," Danny says. He readjusts his hold on Grace and the group make their way to the house.
One day a month later, Grace comes into the barn almost as withdrawn as she had been at the start. Steve can tell something is up. "Gracie, is everything okay?" Steve asks after they've gotten Mana brushed, tacked, and warmed up. He's honestly not expecting an answer.
"I've been having bad dreams. And I keep thinking I see one of the bad men, but when I look closer he's not there any more. I'm scared," Grace says with tears in her eyes.
Steve helps Grace dismount, knowing she's in no fit state to ride. He calls Chin over and hands over Mana's reins explaining what Grace just told him. "I'm going to take her up to the house, try to get a hold of her father. If one of the bastards that kidnapped her is here, I'll..." Steve can't even finish the thought in his head. Grace and Danny have definitely wormed their way under Steve's skin, they're family; he'll do anything and everything in his power to protect them.
Before they are even in the house Steve's got his cell phone out scrolling to Danny's number. "Williams." Danny answers, clipped. Professional.
"Danny, it's Steve. Has Grace told you that she thinks she's been shadowed the past few days?" Steve doesn't bother with pleasantries, he knows Danny will want to know what's going on more than he'll want some bullshit greetings.
"She mentioned some bad dreams, but nothing more. Damnit, I knew she hasn't seemed herself these past few days. I've been too damn busy with work. Screw that; as soon as this case is closed I'm taking vacation. What has she said? Has she been able to give you a description?" Danny is ready to put a BOLO out right now he just needs this guy's basics.
"Hang on a second Danny, I'll ask her." Steve pulls the phone away from his ear activating the speaker, he turns to Grace, "Gracie, this guy you've seen following you. What's he look like?"
"He's shorter than you, but taller than Danno. And he's real skinny. Um, he's got dark hair and it's short. Oh and he's got a real big scar on his cheek. From when I scratched him with a nail I picked up off the floor of the place they took me." Grace says shivering with the memory of that day. Danno told her that none of those men would be able to hurt her ever again. So knowing one of them is here scares her.
"You get all that, Danno?" Steve asks winking at Grace when he uses her nickname for Danny, he knows it riles the other man up.
"Yes Steven, I got it. I know exactly who it is. I'll have a BOLO out on him in a few minutes, he won't be leaving the island," Danny informs Steve through gritted teeth. He's not sure how this guy got out of prison, but he intends to make sure it never happens again. "You'll keep an eye on Grace til I get there, right?"
"'Course man. You don't even have to ask. We'll be here. You wanna talk to Grace for a minute?" Steve offers nodding Grace over.
Grace takes the phone from Steve with a shaky smile. "Hi Danno," she says clutching the phone tightly.
"Hey Monkey. Listen I want you to hang out with Steve for a little bit. Shouldn't be too long. I'll come get you as soon as I can. You need anything you just call. And remember: Danno loves you," Danny says trying to keep how angry he is out of his voice.
"I love you too," Grace says handing the phone back to Steve.
"Catch this guy, Danny," Steve doesn't know why he says that. If anything Danny is already super-motivated to do just that. Steve's just grown so attached to these two, that he knows that if anything would happen to either one he'd be even more lost than he already is.
"You don't have to tell me twice. I'm all over this. I'll see you when I see you. Steve -- Thank you. Just..." Danny doesn't know how to thank this man for what he's done -- is doing -- for what's left of his family.
"No need, man. We'll see you when we see you," Steve responds winking at Grace again, this time to make the words not sound as ominous as they do. He's not sure if he succeeds until Grace smiles. It's a small, tight smile but it means the world to Steve right now.
It's after midnight by the time Danny gets to the house. It looks like a slumber party exploded in the living room. Pizza boxes, DVD cases, and board games litter the coffee table and ground around it. Chin, Kono, and Jenna are talking quietly amongst themselves. Grace is fast asleep on the sofa under a mound of blankets. Danny tries to express his gratitude but he's so far beyond tired it doesn't make a lot of sense. "Come on, you can crash in my room for a few hours," Steve offers, guiding Danny up the stairs. Danny falls face down on the bed, grateful for the soft, flat surface. He's asleep almost immediately.
Late the next morning, really it's verging on noon, the whole group is sitting around the dining room table enjoying from-scratch pancakes (Danny's mom's recipe -- never let it be said that Danny is not a gracious guest), turkey bacon (not so gracious that he didn't give Steve an amazing amount of flack for that abomination), and coffee (juice for Grace). Danny gives a watered down version of the events leading up to the capture of one Dominic Turturicci. "That impressive enough for you, Steve?" Danny asks, cheeky now that he's got his wits about him, and some sack time.
"Yeah Danny. That was -- you are... amazing." Steve's voice is low, quiet. Danny's trying to figure out the tone. Awe, concern, and something that Danny's not ready to think about.
So he lets it go for the time being and says, "Come on, Monkey. We should get home and let Steve get his house back under control."
Grace pouts, even though the reason for her having to stay overnight was Not Good, Grace had a good time and she's not ready for it to be over. She likes Steve, and she knows Danno likes him too. "Okay Danno," she sighs and it sounds like it was dragged from the bottom of her soul.
"Why don't you two come over for dinner on Sunday?" Steve asks before he can overthink it. Danny looks at him dubiously, wondering what he's playing at. "Seriously. I'd like to cook dinner for you guys."
Grace already has her 'begging puppy' eyes trained on Danny and, with Steve looking just as ridiculously eager, Danny can't help but acquiesce. "Jesus, I'm in real trouble if you two ever conspire on anything big. Fine we'll come for dinner on Sunday. But for now we have to get going." Danny is firm, he knows if he gives in even a little right now they'll never leave. Not that that would be a bad thing, a tiny, quiet part of his brain speaks up, with a wistful, hopeful note that Danny thought he'd buried with his ex-wife.
They're late getting to Steve's on Sunday and still going back and forth about it when Steve opens the door. "It is a very pretty dress, Monkey. As it should be for what it cost. But you have three just like it in your closet at home, I just don't understand why you couldn't wear one of them?" Danny's tone is a mix of frustration and amusement.
"Danno, it had to..." Grace breaks off when she hears Steve clear his throat. "Steve!" She yells jumping on him when he opens his arms. Steve keeps a hold of Grace as he motions Danny into the house.
"You look very nice this evening, Grace. Is pink your favorite color?" Steve asks setting Grace on her feet.
"Thank you. Yeah, for now. But I might change it soon. There are so many bright, pretty colors here," Grace says shooting a 'ha, take that.' look at her father.
"So, what Hawaiian 'delicacy' are you treating us to tonight? If it's got pineapple anywhere near it I'm not eating it." Danny grumps as they make their way out to the lanai.
"Are you allergic?" Steve asks, true concern in his tone and all over his face.
"No, I just don't think pineapple is an appropriate topping for pizza, or food, really. Real pizza, does not contain fruit, my friend. And I side-eye anyone who tells me otherwise," Danny defends himself and almost laughs at Steve's offended look.
"But Danno," both Grace and Steve start. They look at each other for a second knowing they're about to launch the same argument. They laugh and Steve motions for Grace to go ahead, knowing Danny won't be able to say anything when his own kid offers the obvious. "Tomatoes are fruit and they're in pizza." Steve gives her a thumbs up and laughs when Danny looks gobsmacked.
"Yeah, yeah. Real funny. This is your influence Steve. I'm completely sure of that," Danny grumbles, but it's light hearted. It feels good -- right -- to be able to do this here and now.
Dinner is a quiet affair out on the lanai. Steve grills chicken and veggies (he knows his strengths) and they eat while the sun sets over the main paddock. It's a pretty amazing sight and Steve is proud to be able to show it off to Danny and Grace. Shortly after they finish eating Grace sees Mana make his way over to the fence nearest them. "Danno can I go see Mana?" She all but begs, eyes shining with happiness. It's a sight that Danny wants to hold onto forever.
"Sure Monkey; but stay where we can see you, yeah?" Danny says huffing out a laugh as Grace jumps up from the table and hugs him quickly before running for the fence. "This place has been good for her. I was worried for a while that I'd never get my Gracie back after what happened. But being here, on the Island, and at the ranch it's been just what she's needed," Danny confides to Steve once Grace is happily chattering to her equine companion.
"I'm glad she's getting back to herself. Kids like her are the reason I started this place. But I will admit when her doctor decides she doesn't have to come any more I'll miss her," Steve returns. Danny can read the honesty written all over the other man's face.
"I think she'll miss it too. I was gonna ask if there was any way it would be possible for us to come out on the weekends..." Danny lets the question fade, not sure how he was going to end it.
"I'd like that a lot. And tell me if I'm reading this wrong but, maybe some weekends, you and me could get together; you know, just us," Steve puts out there, saying a silent prayer that he's right about the vibes he's been getting.
Danny's grin gets a little bigger and he lays his hand, palm up and open, on the table between them. "Yeah," he nods liking the sound of that. "Yeah, I think that could be arranged." His grin blossoms into a full, eye crinkling, smile when Steve slips his fingers between his. Yeah, they're going to be okay.
The Beginning.
