"Just out of curiosity -" Cath held up a book from their latest shipment, which showed what looked like a teddy bear on the front cover - "Why do we have this?"

"Because we're a non-judgemental store, and if people want to do the furry thing, we'll happily sell them books about it?" Kono offered.

"Right, and more power to them for owning and enjoying their kinks." Cath made a face at the book. "Except this is a book about making teddy bears. As in the soft toy."

Kono crossed the store-room and flipped through the book. "Must be a special order, right?" It really was a crafting book. "Aw, look, there's a pattern to make a police officer bear."

The sound of Cath flipping pages in their order sheets came to an abrupt halt at the same moment as the realisation hit Kono. "Steve," they said in unison.

"Or Mary," Kono added, then, when Cath raised a dubious eyebrow, "Come on, you know Jenni still hasn't learned to say no to weird orders for Steve placed by a woman."

Cath still looked doubtful, but there was no way she could deny that the seventeen-year old weekend assistant they'd hired a couple of months ago was still learning the ropes. "I'm kind of impressed she managed to find it in the catalogue. I don't think I've ever even looked in the craft sections of any of our suppliers."

Kono had, but her one and only attempt to hand-craft sex toys was a topic best left closed. "Can I call him with the order?" she asked. "I really want to hear what he has to say."

"Only if you put it on speaker." Cath pulled out an order form and held it up. "Because it looks like Steve placed the order himself."

Steve, tragically, had his phone set to voicemail, which must have meant he was busy forcibly teaching baby navy officers not to drown. Disappointed, Kono left a message asking him to call in, and flipped the door sign to open.

"These are actually pretty cute." Cath leaned one elbow on the counter and turned the book the right way up.

"That one's just disturbing."

Cath looked down at the picture Kono was pointing to, and made a face. "Yeah, okay, that is weird. What's it supposed to be?"

"I seriously have no idea." Kono closed the book firmly, leaning over the counter to tuck it away with the other pre-orders. When she straightened up, Cath was grinning at her. "What?"

Cath shrugged innocently. "Just enjoying the view."

"One-track mind," Kono said, but she wrapped her hand in Cath's hair and tugged her in for a kiss anyway.

*

The three silver bells over the store door jangled an hour or so before closing time, when Cath was on a coffee run and Kono was in the store-room, sorting returns to make space for the gay history books they had coming in for Pride. "Help you?" she called.

"S'just me," Danny's voice called back.

"And me!" Grace's added, affronted.

"And a monkey," Danny said as Kono stepped into the store. "Hey."

"Danny." She held her hand out for Grace's high five. "Gracie-bear."

"Is Catherine here?" Grace asked, trailing her hand over a shelf of parenting books.

"What happened to, hello, Kono, my wonderful surfing teacher, I'm so glad Danno brought me by your shop to visit with you?" Danny asked, corralling his daughter back to his side with an arm around her shoulders.

Which was probably for the best - they ran a family friendly bookstore as much as they could, but a certain amount of unsuitable-for-children material was pretty much a given, and Grace had an unerring ability to zero in on it.

"Can we go surfing on the weekend?" Grace asked, leaning into Danny.

Danny rolled his eyes over her head, half-smiling. Kono grinned back. She loved Grace and the way she spread her casual, childlike affection over everyone around her. "I'm working Saturday, but maybe Sunday morning before we open?"

Grace glanced up at Danny, who nodded."Yay." Grace bounced on her toes a little. "And Steve, right?"

"And Steve, sure," Kono agreed. "Do you know where Tina's Bakery is, Grace?" Grace nodded, and Kono dug a ten dollar bill from her pocket. "If you can catch Cath before she leaves to come back here, ask her to buy us four Portugese tarts, okay?"

"Five," Danny corrected. "Steve's meeting us here."

Grace pulled away from him as he said it. "Can I go, Danno?"

"Tina's is the one on the corner, right?" At Kono's nod, Danny gave Grace a gentle nudge toward the door. "Go on, then."

The bells jangled crazily as Grace ran out.

"Steve's meeting you here?" Kono asked, straightening the display on the counter.

"You left him a message." Danny shrugged. "Though I'm not sure why I can't collect his book for him."

Kono had a pretty good idea. "S'good to see you, anyway. Chin says you guys are having a quiet few weeks?"

Danny shook his head, leaning against the counter. "Probably means the criminals are gearing up for some big drama. I dunno, their timing's generally pretty bad."

"I thought you had time off?"

"Yeah." Danny's grin softened. "Six months, and Steve has three. Maybe a couple more, depends when his kids deploy."

Kono bit her lip, hiding her own smile a little. "How long to go now?"

"Four weeks, three days. Not that we're counting or anything."

"Right," Kono said, but before she could say anything more, the bells over the door jangled again, Cath ducking in, followed by Steve, his hand on Grace's shoulder.

"I found this one wandering the streets," Steve teased. "Figured I should bring her back to a responsible adult. Kono?"

"I'm sorry, excuse me, if anyone in this relationship is a responsible adult, it's me."

"You're saying I'm not a responsible adult?" Steve held Grace closer for a moment, then nudged her gently in Kono's direction. Kono caught her, relieved her of the white bag of still warm pastries, and leaned in to kiss Cath hello, tasting coffee.

"I believe that is what I'm saying, babe, yes." Danny hooked a finger through the loop of Steve's jeans, tugging him in close. Kono watched Steve twitch, like he'd curbed the urge to check who was watching, right before he ducked his head and let Danny kiss him.

"Aw," Cath said, biting into her pastry. "They're cute together."

"Cute?" Steve pulled away to glare at them both. "Who you calling cute, Rollins?"

"Seems to be you." Cath smiled sweetly, reaching under the counter for the book. "Especially given your newest hobby."

"Should I ask what kind of hobby these two can be supporting you with?" Danny asked, giving Grace a very pointed glance where she'd curled up in a soft chair with a book of short stories.

"Ta-da!" Cath produced the crafting book, leaning back slightly when Steve made to grab it from her. "Special order, came in this morning."

"What the-" Danny reached over for the book, ducking Steve's attempt to steal it from him. "You bought a book on sewing teddy bears?"

"Can I see, Danno?" Grace took the book in both hands. "They're so cute! Are you really going to make one, Steve?"

Steve perched on one arm of the chair and flipped through the book. "Thinking about it, yeah. For your new sister, you think she'd like that?"

"Can I help?" Grace leaned into Steve's side, and Steve glanced over at Danny, looking as safe and happy as Kono'd ever seen him. "I'm good at sewing, Miss Hanna said."

"I'm sure you'd be a big help," Danny agreed, settling on the other side of Grace. "I didn't know you could sew, babe."

Cath choked up a little, obviously trying not to laugh. "He never told you about being a boy scout?"

"No," Danny said, his expression a little curious, "He never mentioned that one."

"Must have slipped my mind," Steve said lightly.

"Hey," Cath said softly as Grace pointed to the police officer bear, Steve and Danny leaning in to look closer.

Kono tipped her head to rest on Cath's shoulder. "Hey, back."

"You ever think about having kids?"

"When'd we have time to have kids, running this place?" Kono asked. Not that it was an answer, which she was sure Cath knew. Seven years the two of them had been together, Danny and Steve adopting a young girl had been a sign that the kids conversation was forthcoming.

"We'd make the time, if we wanted to. Steve's negotiating adopting a kid with his boyfriend while he's active duty Navy, he can do that, we could make a kid work."

Cath sounded so certain, and when Kono lifted her head, she looked serious as well. "You want to?" Kono asked, a little surprised.

"Maybe." Cath dipped in for a kiss. "We could talk about it."

"Later," Kono agreed.

"So, hey." When Kono looked up, Steve and Grace were still looking at the craft book, and Danny was leaning on the counter, credit card between two fingers. "Looks like I'm paying for the book, and also making dinner invitations."

"Tonight?"

"Late opening, right?" Danny shook his head. "Nah, this weekend. Chin's bringing Malia, and Jenna's coming too - apparently we're celebrating it being a month till Megan comes to live with us."

"Good a reason to celebrate as any," Kono agreed. She checked a quick glance at Cath, who nodded. "We'll be there."

"Great." Danny grinned, looking over his shoulder to include Steve and Grace in his grin. "Good, great."
