A second post this month! I know you're all impressed.
My updates are many and varied.
Okay, they're not, but we can all pretend.
First, watched the S3 finale of Sherlock. OKAY, so first thing's first: Mary Watson is amazing. The Watsons are amazing. Sherlock essentially acting as marriage counselor was amazing. BUT THAT CONFRONTATION. In the house that's only a facade, that Sherlock owns. Guh. Loved everything surrounding Mary Watson. I mean, I figured she had to be some sort of ex-spy (or similar - couldn't have given you specifics), so I wouldn't say I was shocked. But I love how that played out. I loved Watson's anger. I loved that she wasn't supposed to be crazy. She was supposed to be the stable, loving woman he thought he needed, but that is not the personality type he is attracted to. And he chose her.
I ship the Watsons super hard.
That scene was just so perfect. When Sherlock steps in and Watson's all, "Fine. Your way. Always your way." And she becomes the client, and they see if they like her. Loved it all so much.
I just love the dynamics between any combination of Sherlock//Watson/Mary.
And then the scene between the Watson's at Sherlock's parents... So much love.
I also have really been enjoying the dynamic between the Holmes boys this season. That scene in the garden was hilarious.
And the way they show Sherlock's mind palace is neat.
BUT...
I don't like the ending. There, I said it. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Sherlock Holmes essentially committing a calculated murder. Particularly if John was under threat. I think that is perfectly in line with his character (and can we talk about how Mary was prepared to do the same thing? GUH.) What I actually have a problem with is the way that was resolved (I can't say the "consequences" of that, because there were none). So, I am pretty much never in favour of killing a person, and it often bothers me when it's done in fiction with next to no consequences for the perpetrator. I recognize that there are some people who are essentially pure evil, and there are arguments to be made as to the need for them to die (because much like the Mentalist's Red John, creepy media dude was never going to end up in prison. It just wasn't going to happen). Dude was seriously creepy and awful. I can kind of get to: he just needs to die.
Where I have the problem is the logistics of the aftermath. I think they should have had Sherlock be one step ahead. I guess the point is to show that he can occasionally overlook things in his deductions, but honestly, I think the episode would have worked better if Sherlock had gotten away with it. I mean obviously Mycroft would have probably known, but had no proof, or at least plausible deniability. Because I think what happened instead (with him being exiled for all of two seconds before Moriarity showed up again) was so anti-climatic and irritating. What was the point of having him get caught if his "punishment" was going to be canceled literally immediately? Why bother having the pretence of consequences if they're going to be swept under the rug? Just show him beat the system. It's less annoying. It really is. And I say this as a person who's watched the Mentalist for six seasons.
If you're going to have "consequences" have them. But if your character is going to be above that sort of thing (which Sherlock clearly is), then seriously, don't bother.
And the less said about the weirdness of the first few scenes betweenSherlock and his "girlfriend" the better. (That subplot was made slightly less hateful by the scene in the hospital.)
I mean, I loved 95% of it. But just not the resolution. Which is a shame.
In other news, I've decided to start re-watching Stargate SG-1. Well, re-watching and hopefully finally completing. Because I still haven't scene much after the start of season 8. I'd fogotten how much fun that show could be. And interestingly, it may be one of the few shows where the first season isn't my favourite (it's either three or four, I think). I tend to love first seasons. I think I tend to like watching things get set up.
Have re-blogged one thing on Tumblr. Still not entirely sure about it, but I'm going to give it a go.
