Knitters! I want to get a hat made for Corey, for when he goes bald, and I want it made out of very, very soft yarn.  My brother-in-law is going to knit it, I think, and I'm going to buy the yarn.  So: What's really super soft, really warm, and makes a good hat? And where do I get it? And how much should I get? The hat will just be a plain beanie, ( Read more... )

OH, you are so sweet. I actually went ahead and bought a skein of it today. :)

But thank you for thinking of me. You're a doll.

I like malabrigo, too, but it is def. hand-wash only. They have one called Rios that is washable, with all the awesome of regular Malabrigo. You need to go to a yarn store to get it, but almost all yarn stores will have it. I suggest asking people at the yarn shop to wind it for you (most places will do it) because it tangles like all get-out.

For any hat pattern I can think of, one skein should be more than enough.

I love Malabrigo worsted too - if it is knit at a tighter gauge, that will help with the pilling. I don't mind the handwash - one of Moira's best hats is made out of Malabrigo and I have never washed it once.

Malabrigo is always lovely, but could be itchy. I'm not sensitive to wool at all but I can feel the prickle even on the delicious buttery gorgeous malabrigo worsted.

If he's at all senstive, go for an alpaca, or an alpaca silk blend. I like blue sky alpaca/silk blend for a lot of baby things for that reason: http://www.jimmybeanswool.com/knitting/yarn/BlueSkyAlpacas/AlpacaSilk.asp

Though I don't normally reccomend synthetics, Berocco Chinchilla is highly reccomended for chemo caps, though small skeins so you might need more than one.Or Debbie bliss cashmerino, which also comes in a few different weights and is very dude-appropriate (I made JBB a hat and scarf and another hat when he lost the first one)
