Reading: Manhood for Amateurs, by Michael Chabon. I love love love Mr. Chabon (sorry, Mary) and I am loving this book. I'm going to buy a copy for a whole bunch of the men I know. Just delightful.

Yeah, that's what I thought until last week.

My work life is a never-ending parade of surprises.

I love that book, and have bought it for a few Dads I know! Chabon went to my high school & grew up in my hometown, so I especially love the essay about growing up there & the comic book club at the interfaith center (where I also attended church, and can totally picture his sad little club). I also love the essay about turning his kids into nerds.

I love him SO MUCH. I love Ayelet Waldman, too. I basically want them to adopt me.

I dunno, sometimes I have my misgivings about Junot too. Don't get me wrong, I think he's an incredible writer, but I think there are a lot of writers out there who are just as amazing if not more so but have not been as savvy about cultivating an academic audience so aren't getting the critical attention in the same high-prestige venues.

(I mean, I love him, I do. But that time I gave a paper on his work and he was in the audience and then he came up to me afterwards and kissed me and publicly called me fabulous? I think he was working academia there a bit, you know? It was flattering, but it also got him the right kind of critical flattery in my publication.)

This is true. He gives hella props to women of color and really pushes their work in interviews. (And even in his own work -- I always point students to that moment where he has Oscar Wao reading Octavia Butler.)
