Eveywhere I go on the internet its Rick Warren this and Ric Warren that. I don't really care who gives the inauguration speech, just as long as Obama is the president when its over; so I've been skipping all the stories about him. Then I inadvertently read that he was the author of The Purpose Driven Life, which reminded me of the TED talk he gave ( Read more... )

I hadn't heard this news yet, and I havnt read that book.
And in the past 5 minutes I havnt read anything about this man I like.

This is particularly disturbing:
"Warren has stated that homosexuality is not a natural way of life and thus not a human right, and should not be tolerated, and that civil unions are not a civil right. In a conversation with Sam Harris for Newsweek, Warren also spoke out against evolution and in favor of creationism, and compared atheists to Mao, Stalin and Pol Pot."

I am very excited about Obama being our next president and have high hopes for what he can do for out country. However this man, Rick Warren, seems to be exactly the opposite of what I believe America needs.

Yeah, see, I've been reading headlines like that. But that TED talk he gave was really good. Had no tinges of any intolerance, and advocated pluralism.

I didn't think they were the same person at first.

I think TED brings that out in people maybe. Richard Dawkins gave an awesome speech at TED about hard core agnosticism that I really loved entitled The universe is queerer than we can suppose, mostly about the limitations of the human frame of reference. Then he went and wrote The God Delusion.

That's pretty weird... it's always hard to tell what a person really thinks these days unless you have conversations with them for years.
