They want to be perceived by their peers as “morally superior”. Sure, nothing wrong with that per se. What makes it wrong is when they also insult other people that have different views. Then they just come off as hypocrites.
Which brings us to what they truly want - clout. Actual virtues be damned, they just want to “sit with the kool kids”. :/
