Physical Punishment In Schools

I recently came across this article and was so horrified I had to share it with you all.  I'm ashamed to admit that I had no clue this was still happening in the U.S.  There is absolutely no excuse for this, protecting teachers committing such horrific offences, it's unconscionable.

I knew that Texas specifically was a "corporal punishment" state, but I didn't know it was widespread in more than a handful of states. I don't get it at all.

Research tells us that physical punishment in schools teaches that violence is a legitimate response and greatly increases the probability that those punished will turn toward violence in their relationships.

As the report notes, "Even students who are not punished find themselves in a hostile, violent environment designed to instill fear."

I mean, isn't there a decent child-development expert or two working with the TX Board of Education or something?
