Vermont Cheddar.

When I was about five.

When, if ever, did you start liking beer?
I don't, really; never did.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish?
I'm from coastal New England....so it happened before memory, I think.

sauerbraten (rarely)

What's the native specialty of your home town?
Afghan food

What's your comfort food?
Depends on the moment, but usually very, very spicy.

What's your favorite type of chocolate?
dark, sweet, no additives.

How do you like your steak?
rare, but not like DW, who prefers that her cow walk through a warm kitchen before it winds up on her plate.

How do you like your burger?
medium at least.

How do you like your eggs?
hard-boiled, scrambled, omelets.

How do you like your potatoes?
Any way they come, except garlic mashed.

How do you take your coffee?
latte, thanks.

How do you take your tea?
plain

Chocolate chip

What's your ideal breakfast?
A large latte. Sometimes with a bagel. On vacation, granola or muesli with yogurt

The Italian Vegetarian from the Nile Cafe in Niles/Fremont CA.

What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)?
Good bread, some sauce, some cheese, cooked through, thin-but-pliable crust.

What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)?
Apple pie for sweet, beth's quiche for savory.

What's your ideal salad?
an italian mista salad.

What food do you always like to have in the fridge?
Eggs, cheese, onions, peppers, bacon, assorted other such things.

What food do you always like to have in the freezer?
Mostly frozen veggies, with the occasional frozen pizza or TJ's junk food.

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard?
flour of different types, grains (rice/wheat), oil, balsamic vinegar, regular vinegar.....god, too much to think of.

What spices can you not live without?
I like them all.

What sauces can you not live without?
Tomato sauce, cream sauces, bearnaise, hollandaise, various reductions of one sort or another, and the glazes (so easy to make!) for wok cooking.

Where do you buy most of your food?
TJs, Safeway.

How often do you go food shopping?
A couple of times a week.

What's the most you've spent on a single food item?
too much on a bottle of really, really good scotch.

What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own?
A very nice nonstick Calphalon pan/saucier (most of it is really Beth's, but that pan is MINE MINE MINE).

What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen?
A very nice saute pan (VERY nice) for $14 at Marshall's

What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without?
A good knife.

How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients?
a couple of times a week, and use the rest for leftovers.

What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients?
A helluva good stirfry

What's your favorite thing to make for yourself?
probably a good loaf of bread-machine bread. Amazing texture.

What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig, chicken and turkey?
Buffalo, duck, snake, wild boar.

What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor?
Last night. Before the cat got to it.

What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild?
Blackberries in the backyard, or an orange off the tree. Can't remember which.

Dinner at Jean-Louis in Greenwich while working for the private equity firm
Dinner with Beth on our fourth or fifth anniversary - a tapas place, just amazing
Dinner at Paolo's in Pahoa on New Year's Eve 2000-2001

What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day?
Either red wine or single-malt Speyside scotch. We're a mixed marriage; Beth drinks peaty Islay scotches, I drink cognac-like Speysides. Somehow, we've made it work for almost twenty years - amazing what mutual attraction will overcome. ;-)

Mollie Katzen's books, the New York Times cookbook, Madhur Jaffrey's books.
