Le sigh

So, my dishnetwork receiver breaks and they send me out a replacement, and I am supposed to send the old one back by UPS, but they forget to include a return shipping label. When I call them, they say they will have to send me out an entire new empty box by UPS with a shipping label because they can't just print out a label and mail it to me. ( Read more... )

Then today, I come home to ANOTHER empty box with a shipping label sitting on my door. [...] they want me to take the empty box all the way down to UPS and mail it back to them.

Seems like shipping it back shouldn't be a problem: just take the label out of the box, reseal the box, put label on the outside, and call UPS to come pick it up! :-D

Problem solved...unless you feel like that would be wrong in some way.... (I can think of lots of ways in which it would be wrong...but most of them are trivial.)

Does UPS come to pick things up? I was told to drop it off at a UPS shipping center. Which is a pain in the ass to get to and park at.

Yup, they do! You need to have a printing shipping label (which you do, but it's also possible to print them yourself from the UPS web site).

Go to http://www.ups.com/ and click on "Schedule a Pickup" in the left sidebar (and then fill out the forms).

Given that they'll come to your door to drop off, why wouldn't they come to you to pick up? :-) That is, they are already in your neighborhood every day anyway, picking up just generates more business for them.

Our packages get delivered to the local gas station. We are expected to bike down there and pick them up, despite having paid for shipping.

Yeah, but that's the local character of the place you have chosen to live. I wouldn't mind that. :)

Especially if I had, in fact, asked for the delivery. Which I did not.

Cornell, which was always complaining about being poor, did the same sort of things. Like spending 40 cents in postage to mail me a bill for 13 cents.
