Death etiquette

I am reading a book in which someone has died, and of course, the community reacts in the usual way--friends coming over to the house, neighbors bringing food, flowers, etc. It has reminded me of when my mother died, and in recent years, as we've all grown older, unfortunately more people I know have experienced losses or know people that have.
