>> You might be asking yourself,wtf is there to learn about making a black and white icon? It's just desaturating an image!
Truth being,there ARE ways,you guys 8D it's not just desaturating. In black and white icons,you are working with shadows and highlights. Here's two little incredibly easy methods that can help you make your black and white icons a bit more interesting ^^
ONE;
Here we have our base image,with snuggly KyuSung XD ♥ prep it however you want.
Now,click on image>adjustments>desaturate. Okay,so it's black and white now. Now what?
Well,now what we do is darken those midtones and shadows just a little. We do this by duplicating our base and setting it to SOFT LIGHT 100%.
Now,for our little magic touch:make a new LEVELS layer and give it these settings:
INPUT: 15, 0.55, 242
OUTPUT: 37, 255
Click OK. And just like that,you're done~!It surely looks better than just a desaturated image IMO.
This coloring will give you faded blacks,dark,warm midtones,and brighter highlights :3
EXAMPLES:
TWO;
Our base: PRETTY Yesung. ♥
Go to image>adjustments>desaturate. 8D
Now, duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 100%. You'll notice the background is now completely black.
Time for some more magic! Make a new LEVELS layer and give it the following settings:
INPUT: 51,1.31,255
OUTPUT: 35,212
Click OK,and you're done!Easy.
What this coloring will give you is gray,dark whites, light midtones,and dark,faded blacks. All in all,it's pretty gray and faded coloring.

LEVELS:WHAT IS IT?;
This is just a short explanation on LEVELS,and what it does.
WHAT ARE SHADOWS, MIDTONES, AND HIGHLIGHTS?:
shadows-the dark parts of an image-mostly hair and shadows on people. The background on the YeSung icon and shadows in his hair are a good example.
midtones-general colors of an image-mostly your person's skintone without the shadows.
highlights-the lighter parts of an image-mostly the highlights on someone's hair,or the light on someone's face. The light color on Kyu's cheeks is an example of this.
WHAT IT DOES: Levels is used to control highlights,shadows,and midtones.
WHAT DOES WHAT: The three numbers on top control the intensity of the shadows,midtones,and highlights. If you look down,there will be 3 little arrows.
black arrow: shadows
gray arrow: midtones
white arrow: highlights
If you look below these arrows,there will be two other arrows. These are your brightness/contrast controls for your white and dark arrows. The white controls brightness, and black controls contrast.
HOW DO YOU USE IT?: Levels can be used for both grayscale and colored images.
Levels works by dragging the arrows to different directions.
Black arrow going right: increases shadows and makes them darker.
Gray arrow going right: increases midtones and makes them darker.
Gray arrow going left: decreases midtones and makes them lighter.
White arrow going left: increases highlights and makes them brighter.
You use the bottom two arrows to control the shadows and whites.
If your whites are too bright,decrease the brightness with the lower white arrow by dragging it to the left.
If your blacks are too dark or contrasted, drag the lower black arrow to the right to make them lighter.
Hope this helped at least a little :3
