Confused and treading carefully

the Holly and Jessica murders are everywhere it seems, I was mildly surprised to see that its got as far as Canada (well jenni knows about it ). I was just wondering why this case has shot to such publicity and encouraged such histrionics (the News of the World's 'End of Innocence' headline almost taking the biscuit pipped at the post only by this ( Read more... )

You are making a lot of sense here. I live in Iceland and I heard all about this case. Which I find very strange ... this was more covered than searches for missing people here in Iceland. Icelandic kids are afraid to go out in their Manchester United t-shirts which I think is awful.

I answered this last night, only today I decided to see what the 'screen post button' did. The answer was: screen posts so only I can see it and I can't work out how to get it back so other people can.
Im trying to remember my original post.
Something like, Im surprised its got to Iceland, I mean, to you, arent they just some random girls? and I don't see how any media attention in Iceland can be helpful to the case. It SUX they should be devoting some time to help trying to solve cases in ICeland.
Also, judging by a lot of feeling among friends, I think a lot of people are secretly uncomfortable with all this emotion, just it seems almost dangerous to say it. hehe, like we're going to wake up and see ourselves named and shamed in the paper for sympatheising and aiding paedophiles. Its just like the Emperor's new clothes, no one wants to be the first to admit it.

Random girls you say. When the media starts to show interest in those cases, the victims stop being random because they have names, faces and families. One can hear about some thousands of people being killed in this or that disaster and feel nothing because those victims are anonymus, ageless etc. The media creates sympathy. One recent case here in Iceland. A young man was brutally beaten and left to die and the media covered the case in such way one could believe the young man was a martyr. Well, then the young man, after having recovered at a hospital, is found stealing from the hospital's medicine cabinet. The media can no longer portray him as a martyr but has to show him as the hapless addict he is.

The media holds a great power because it's the propaganda master of our time. Instead of the church or other authorites before, the media is now the one who can call for someone's head.

It's strange, isn't it? When they found the bodies, it was headline news here in Australia .... Why this case? Don't worry, it's a legitimate question. And it's a question I can't answer. I think that maybe the public needs or wants a face to put to the tragedy; they really can't comprehend what's happening until they see the faces of two sweet, innocent girls plastered over the papers.

I can't remember seeing much about it here in the States, but out media has been busy with quite a few of our own abductions, this year, including a recently concluded trial in one case.

I know about it mostly because of the Quill and because I watch BBC World News from time to time.

I think a lot of it is to do with the fact that there are two of them. That's what makes this case unusual beyond all the others. You hear so often (and I say it myself to my tutor group), if you're going out then go with someone and you tend to presume that if someone is with a friend or a group of friends then they are safe from attacks like this. But it seems that they're not.

It's disturbing - two ten year olds in a 'safe' village location simply disappearing on a summer evening, well before it got dark. It does haunt the imagination and make people think, "What if they were mine?" (Although that might just be me being hormonal - you can ignore that! ;) )

The press definitely hasn't helped the case. I read the other day that the police are intending on making a bid to change the law on how these things are reported and rewards offered. They're less than impressed that people travelled to Soham to hunt for bodies over the countryside and disturbing possible evidence for a financial reward. That's another issue though...

Yes I must admit a lot of the thoughts you've voiced here have been going through my head also. At times like these we soul search and I can see hwere you're coming from with what you're saying HB.
